Using this logic, the US ‘won’ Afghanistan and Iraq.

Yes, we did. Our military rolled theirs. Same thing in Vietnam, we smoked them in actual conflicts.

I get what you're saying- but I'm avoiding the political angles. Or the big, overall "what did we seek to gain" angle.
I'm talking actual, troop vs troop engagement, the Russians are winning. They are moving their forces to where they want, and the Ukrainians are getting pushed back.

There is no history under Putin of doing this. They are going to flatten cities even though they could. It also makes no sense to do this if you are trying to win people over. They are making public statements on top of that not to do it. It also aligns with what is happening on the ground.

Russia has launched more than 710 missiles against Ukraine since its attack on the country began two weeks ago and the Pentagon has seen indications Kremlin forces are also dropping so-called dumb bombs, a senior U.S. defense official said Wednesday.

"Dumb bombs" are munitions that are not precision-guided and therefore have limited ability to hit targets accurately.

The official said it’s unclear whether Moscow’s use of the dumb bombs is by design or by default due to potential damage to its precision guided capabilities. Nevertheless, the U.S. government is seeing “increasing damage to civilian infrastructure and civilian casualties” with the combined use of bombs and missiles.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, the U.S. sees “no real ground progress to speak to except in a couple of places," the official said.

I'm sure they had reasons right or wrong but it is clear they don't want Nato expanding to the point where a Nato member borders Russia
Several NATO members already border Russia & it seems Finland may join after this invasion of Ukraine.

Defense in depth. That’s why Imperial Russia pushed west, and why Stalin did as well.

A hostile Ukraine was also dangerous.

Maybe, but it's worth remembering that everything we think we know about Russia's goals or plans for this war is filtered through the US intelligence agencies and mass media. It's fair to say at a minimum that they have a spin on this and it's in their interest for Americans to think Russia is failing to meet their objectives.

actually some of it was directly from Putin during his one hour rant.

Not militarily, we didn't.

We're using totally different perspectives, it seems. Your concept of "winning" seems to be successful nation-building. I'm talking about military engagements between armed forces.

And the big issue with the Ukraine situation, it remains to be seen what falls out of this. If Russia can leverage a big chunk of land away, especially with ports, strenghtens ties with China and India (bypassing the need to lock in US ties), and forces Europe to concede on the oil and gas issue, while also forcing a future Ukraine to NOT be Western-leaning, this will be a win for them.

Whatever reality you want to live in, our US government classifies these wars as defeats not victories.

Zelensky has signed a law that allows all civilians to carry weapons of war & use them against Russian soldiers

I am curious to what all this entails. Does everyone get machine guns rocket launchers and grenades or what?

I think it’s ultimately immoral.

There’s no line between soldiers and civilian now.

Morality went out the window when the first Russian stepped across the border… you don’t get to pick and choose your morals.

Mass mobilization is the only ways for Ukraine to survive.

Volkssturm aren’t going to win the war.

This just kills more Ukrainian civilians
