Andrew Jackson was one of the best presidents in our country’s history. Yeah, we did bad things to the Indians, but damn he hated the big banks. I wish we had another one like him, but the time for those kind of men are long gone. He’s turning in his grave

So thanks for pointing out Trump’s first term spending issues. As I stated Trump, as every republican leader has to deal with is democrats destruction of everything. In Trump’s case he had to deal with Obama’s collapse of the economic productivity, Obama’s war on domestic norms, his deep state build up that still has repercussions, the collapse of world order do to a virus that was created ( but somehow no flu deaths resulting) and spread worldwide that became a economic nightmare. Now we dealing with all that bullshite still along with Biden’s round table of acting presidents that enhanced an already illegal immigration issue, created photo bust the system, a rise in Muslim culture as well as allowing fraud on a scale unprecedented on both the domestic and foreign affairs. Again thanks for showing the money wasted on fixing the democrats negligence

Stop sending money to other countries, invest it into the US. Stick to the American hemisphere, from Hawaii in the Pacific to Iceland in the Atlantic, pull out military from everywhere else and abandon those bases.

That alone would save trillions.

Republican presidents have added slightly more to the national debt per term than Democratic presidents.

Republican presidents added about $1.4 trillion per four-year term, compared to $1.2 trillion added by Democrats since 1913.

That's a bit of an ancillary point. While the President proposes a budget, the House holds the purse strings as all spending must originate there. The House can just rubber-stamp a President's budget, shred it and throw it in the garbage while making their own, or anything in-between (including just not passing a budget but doing CRs into infinity, which is the most irresponsible thing they could do so of course it's what they've mostly done since ~2008).

A better gauge is House control. If you really want to get granular you can look at House and the Oval Office. During COVID I ran those numbers from 2000-2020 and it came out to be that while Democrats held the House half as long as the GOP, they presided over ~2x the deficit spending (they held the House through the GFC, through the last year of Trump I and worst of the COVID spending).

For Oval Office and House combo, if memory serves it was Dem/Dem as the worst deficit spender with Dem/GOP as the least (which serves as an emphasis to how much influence the House has on spending).

They literally can't afford to.

Around 1/4 of GDP comes from government spending. We're currently on track to hit close to $2T in deficit spending alone this year with projections being nowhere close to as low as $1.5T as far as the projections go.

To put this into a little clearer context, the deficit was ~$1.775T last year while GDP grew only ~2.1%. When you look back over the last 50 years, deficits as a share of GDP were moderate, jumped up sharply from 2008-2019 and then jumped up even more sharply from 2020-present. This means that since the GFC the economy has become increasingly addicted to not just government spending, but deficit spending and now we're entering the period of addiction to excessive deficit spending.

Cutting enough spending to balance the budget immediately (while still servicing debt) would mean a cut of around 35% to all federal spending and would result in at least a recession (possibly depression). Balancing it in a decade would require something like a law forcing the freezing of spending for 10 years and then cutting ~$200B each year (going off projected 2026 deficit spending).

No one is going to run for (re)election on "I'm going to make sure the federal government doesn't give you more." Hell, this burgeoning DSA crap is built solidly on a foundation of the opposite (Mamdani is learning rhetoric can't overcome basic math, but reality doesn't stop the hardcore ideologists for long).

If they try, they'll get run out of office and they know it. So they try to keep kicking the can down the road until they can retire and let someone else deal with it.

Hate to break this to you, but we are probably closer to 150 trillion right now if you account for all the unfunded future liabilities of government pensions, future social security benefits and Medicare benefits.

Always an excuse for cutting nothing. Man up, clearly explain the threat (which is a hell if a lot BIGGER threat than Iran) and get to work making the deficit ZERO.

America isn’t a we can’t country.

Yeah, because republicans under Trump’s leadership have been so fiscally responsible.

Kinda makes one wonder why so many Republicans themselves or other rightists insist on being Trump’s harshest critics
Perhaps it’s because Trump has outspent Obama his first term and outspend Biden this term. And his major focus in Congress has been to oppose anyone that didn’t vote for his spending.

Exactly. Without Trump we'd have all the things communists are for like:

- government-run and subsidized drug stores
- government ownership of private companies
- price controls for credit card vendors
- government deciding who can/can't buy houses
- using government to threatening private companies for "price gouging"
- monetary stimulus and currency manipulation to cover up floundering economy
- government import controls, deciding what americans should be allowed to buy
- complete disregard for spending and deficit spending

You joke maybe but this is ultimately true. Nothing will happen essentially. None of this stuff is really a big deal. The federal reserve will simply create more currency. Our money will go down in value but so will everyone else’s.
Why doesn’t he government just mint a $40 trillion coin and call it good?

Here we are again 1-1/2 years into Trump term and we are still resuscitating the death spiral of Biden’s term. Trump may not get it righted but damn sure better than what would have happened if another democrat had been elected. This may take a decade or more to straighten things out, if even possible, but there is never any doubt that republicans are always in repair mode after democrats failures.
This is exactly how we got $40 Trilion in debt. Trump re-passed Biden’s budget. Then added more spending on to with the OBBBA. And now wants to double military spending. But somehow… it’s not his fault, because the other side is “worse”.

The “other side” may be worse. The “our side” is terrible too. Accepting it is the greatest trick ever played. “But we gotta support the team” is no argument of merit.

Wonder how much of that can be attributed to the fraud that the Trump Administration has exposed and continues to expose.
10-20% is my guess.....but I really think it is much, much more.
