Notice how they phrase this. Any definition they like is meaningful. Any definition they don't like is not. Their idea of a meaningful definition has creedance. Your idea of a meaningful definition does not. This is a heads I win tails you lose statement. And of course, they will never, ever, ever give an actual "meaningful definition" of the word. It just means whatever they want it to mean. It's like arguing with a spoiled child. Of course, this is a New York Times op-ed writer so I am being redundant there.

If they hadn’t been “let in” with so little pushback, the thing would’ve been no different than any protest or demonstration outside the Supreme Court. We would all probably assume that there have been many a hostile show of protest at the front steps of that building over the years and decades. So there’s no fundamental difference between the two situations whatsoever. You got folks protesting for change, with various instances of individuals and groups getting a carried away with resulting breakdown of civil order for a brief period.

Yes, the situational distinction between the two was the entry into the Capital Building, but again, there wasn’t exactly a consistent effort to beat them back, not from what a bunch of the video evidence specifically in that area shows. In fact I surmise that there was no coordinated plan to “storm the building,” and their likely would’ve been no further efforts to enter en masse had the first bunch of people entering been physically pushed back and away. Trump tried to tell em they needed some military hands out there, to be on the safe side. But nooooo, Pelosi was too busy a scandalous bitch and trying to annoy Trump to bother with doing the right thing.

This is a logical fallacy.

By qualifying a definition as “meaningful”, the writer gives himself the sole authority to decide what constitutes an insurrection.
