So we get to the concert and by song 8 they had played the 3 songs I really remembered well, and I realized these guys are skating off about 5 recognizable songs.
They’ve actually got dozens of bangers. They’re not one of the casino has-been tour bands.

Who cares? They've sucked since their 2nd album. Which was what? Over 33 years ago?
I liked their third album. Amorica. That might also be because I was a kid in the 90s and that album cover was banned in some places.
Which is a play on words of amor and America. Love America.

I don't know what a "banger" is, but they have five charted hits in the Billboard Top 200. Three from their first album and two from their second.
If "banger" just means a song you like, then I'm not sure what significance you think it is.
They did much better with albums than singles. Seven in the top 15.
On paper at least, that's the profile of a band with a loyal core audience but without extraordinary mass appeal. Which is exactly what the poster you replied to said. They got a lot of mileage out of five popular songs.

Aren't they? Their last charted hit was in 1992. Radio was still relevant until around 2000.

That was the last album (disc) I bought by them.

The Black Crowes
The World's greatest cover band, and absolutely loathed in Atlanta

Chris Robinson has & will always be a douchebag, a contrarian worthy of the OT.
At one time I will admit I was a member of the CrowMafia, but him & his brother are such counts it didn’t last long. I caught the Crows post one of Chris’s rehab stints(1st) and his divorce and from getting into a drunken, cocaine induced felonious brawl with his brother.
Ben Harper opened & the Crows played for 2+ hours in a place that holds 2,500 max. It was magic in a bottle.

There are tons of popular bands that don’t make the charts. That’s a silly metric to judge the quality of a band.
This is a great album released in 2009

People need to research a band they want to see or hear before giving them money. If you don't, you deserve to be disappointed in what they say

Cool story, brah.
The problem is that I wasn't judging the quality of the band.
Might want to read the whole conversation before you reply so that you know what you're replying to.
(I get it, lots of posts on this board).

According to whom?
You?
Relatively speaking, it wasn't even very popular among their core fanbase.
Doesn't mean it wasn't "great," but the discussion was about popularity. When numbers are thrown out and we default to "great," then there is no right or wrong answer because there's no objective information.
You could think it's great and I could think it's terrible and we'd both be right (and I guess we'd both be wrong).

I saw them a couple of times in 1990, back when they were actually relevant. Saw them open for Metallica and Aerosmith and then for Robert Plant. I didn't go for them either time, but I can remember them being a decent live band. Chris Robinson does seem like an arrogant tool, though.

Both brothers are looney tunes, but Rich actually looked what I though an older version of Rich would look like. Chris looked ridiculous, like an old Jewish lady. Sounded good, but seemed drunk or stoned (big surprise), and just looked dumb.
Has he reached Steven Tyler’s “My great aunt is an old lesbian” look yet?
