This.
50 years on from the Civil War there were still hard feelings between the men and women of the South and the rest of the country. When we declared war on Germany in 1917, the United States government needed soldiers from all points of the map. Thus bases such as Fort Bragg, Fort Gordon, and Fort Benning were established, named after Confederate generals, as an olive branch to those soldiers who were being recruited from the Deep South.
In short, it was an act meant to foster unity amongst all Americans. Ironic when you consider the name changes from two years ago were meant to sew division.

We'll see if this happens. I hope so. Bring back Ft. Hood and Ft. Rucker and Pelham training range too.

I don't hate people I don't know. Unless you have made a willful adult decision to practice Islam. In that case, it's possible I suppose. There's no excuse for 7th century barbarism in a 21st century world.

I don't think most southerners were all that fond of Bragg either. Sounds more like they were making fun of us.
If we're out of admirable officers, let's name it Traveller after Lee's horse.

Need to change Fort Moore back to Fort Benning while they're at it.
At Least Fort Moore is now named after a true American hero, Hal Moore, of “We Were Soldiers” fame.

HMMM - was gonna advocate to change Ft. (Johnson?) back to Ft. Polk - but this takes some of the steam out of that.
I grew up around Camp Polk, later upgraded to Ft. Polk.

I'm not arguing the legitimacy of Hal Moore's service to this country. It's about erasing the legacies of all the soldiers that have come through "Fort Benning" and disconnecting them from current generations serving.

Change them all back.
Hood, Benning, Lee, Stewart, Rucker, etc. etc.

Didn't even know they changed the name!

You are known by great victories and also great defeats. Chattanooga was a horrible performance by Bragg.
But Ft Bragg just sounds good!

They are still Bragg and Benning to the masses honestly.

The opposition will suggest the cost to change signage, letterhead and the like is a good enough reason to keep the stupid name. And what is the name of that Army base in Southern Georgia? And wasn't there a base outside Killeen, Texas that started with an H?

It's not about Bragg. It's about all the men (and women) who have come through there.

Bound by common experience and tradition- associated with the name of the place they came through, but sure... be rude.

This is one area where I am on the other side. Proud Southerner, but why should the US Army name anything after Confederate generals?
Posted on 2/9/25 at 11:02 am to Major Dutch Schaefer
Considering? frick that …

Let's name it after somebody who didn't suck.
quote:
If that wasn't bad enough, a Confederate soldier who had been captured, but escaped, was produced to corroborate the story of the retreating Federal army. Bragg still refused to believe. "Do you know what a retreat looks like?" he snapped at the soldier. Setting the stage with an unforgettable one-liner that was the talk of reunions for years, the Rebel fired back, "I ought to, General; I've been with you during your whole campaign." Bragg's reply was not captured for the record.
