Just finishing this book. Should be required reading for parents, teachers, and frankly everyone in today's world. Conceptually a lot of it boils down to what we already know which is that social media and overly protecting our kids from real experiences is causing very real problems with childhood development, but goes deeper than that and points to the mid 80s as the real start to the trend with moderntechnology only being a tool that exacerbated the core issue. It also provides societal solutions.

Haven’t read it, but will. That guy’s insight is exceptional.
For those that don’t know of him, I recommend The Coddling of the American Mind. It was the first of his books I read.

They say this new gen doesn’t drink enough causing a lot of alcohol companies to do mass layoffs.
Maybe the new generation should put down their edibles and start binge drinking Jack Daniels? Ban weed (causes too much anxiety) and give us all alcoholism. Will feel better in no time.

Less alcohol is a good thing. But so is less cannabis.

the 80's? what kind of technology do you think was emerging in the 80"s?
i was a grown man in the 80's graduated college in 83 no one had even imagined social media in the 80's.

I think the point is that the developing mind reacts differently to technological advances related to screen time than a fully formed human does in the long run. Screen time absolutely started changing in the 80s with the advent of cable tv, video games, handheld devices, etc. Those technologies laid the foundation for what we have today when microchips outpaced vacuum tubes.

My kids are 27 and 25. I hate when they use this....."I'm so anxious.", or "I've been so anxious lately." My kids are great and making their way in this crazy world. But they are still a product of their generation. Generations after us , Gen X, are soft and easy shaken.

Even though it had been around a while, cable tv really took off in the 80s. Along with this came the beginning and rise of the 24 hour news cycle, which has lead to a lot of our problems.

The “something missing” in the human psyche manifests to different degrees in different people. From deep psychoses and dangerous sociopathy to deep inspiration and motivation to excel in both worldly and spiritual enterprises.
An individual may view this as a worthy challenge and grand adventure, or a curse in comparison to those whose lives are fruitful. Said comparison leading to envy, jealousy, feelings of societal neglect, entitlement, contempt and ultimate hatred.
“Where there is no vision, my people die”. The Good Book aptly describes both the problem and the consequences. Death of the individual and/or society whose visionary bubble of perception is flawed. We may understand the problem but that don’t mean we can fix it. Experiencing the painful consequences of a flawed vision IS the fix, as such addresses Humanity’s journey back to union with our Creator. Think ‘Adam and Eve’ and the metaphorical “till the Earth “.
We live in a phenomenal time. At least for those “who eyes that see and ears that hear”. Jesus is already appearing to those who have the Vision to see. “The kingdom of Heaven appeareth not with observation, behold it is within “.
Perception becomes Reality. It could not be Just, otherwise. Thank you Jesus.

nope that's the 90's, i dated a girl 3 and a half years in college when she went home to blytheville for the summer. 3 hours away from little rock, no one could afford long distance so the only way i had to communicate with her was to write her a letter.
i've never been much of a letter writer.
super mario brothers came out in 1985, i was 24 in 85, if you ere a kid in the 80s you are a millennial the everybody gets a trophy generation.
