In a solicitation issued today, the US Secret Service wants a new rifle for their snipers. This, at least to me, speaks loads about the general lack of management at that agency. Did no one in the chain of command not say "now is not the time, wait six months."

quote:

The United State Secret Services (USSS) has issued a solicitation for a Precision Bolt Action Rifle System consisting of a multi-caliber rifle, for use in all environmental conditions. What’s more, the weapons system must be offered in a Right and Left-hand configuration. Additionally, It has to be an off-the-shelf rifle, commercially available and in serial production.

The required calibers are 300 Winchester magnum, 300 Norma Magnum, 300 Precision Rifle Cartridge, and .308 Winchester. The rifle must have a single stage trigger and the metal parts must have a subdued, rust/corrosion resistant finish.

The rifle must be accurate within 1 MOA. It can weigh no heavier than 16 pounds, 0 ounces without accessories (300 Winchester Magnum configuration).

I guess the 16 pound weight limit is to make it easy to get onto sloped roof lines?

Are we sure those calibers aren't racist?

A rifle that weighs 16 pounds without scope/base/rings/bipod/etc. is crazy heavy. Your standard bolt action hunting rifle typically weighs 6-7 pounds. A Remington 700 Sendero, which is a heavy barrel long range rifle with a 26” steel barrel weighs in under 10 pounds. Even the current accuracy international chassis rifle they are currently using comes in well under 16 pounds. For comparison, a Barret M95 .50 BMG weighs 23 pounds.

I am not sure why anyone would imply a 16 pound bolt action rifle in .300 win/norma/PRC is a light weight rifle.

wait, so the only thing that went right was the rifle used by the USSC sniper last weekend so lets 'fix' that.

Why would it need to be an "off the shelf" Rifle?

is that to lower procurement costs.

The government has proven they don’t give a shite about procurement cost. Why would they? It’s our money not theirs. This is probably so parts/components are all interchangeable between rifles.

Be glad you got it in .308. I have a”mountain” rifle built on a Howa 1500 action. It comes in a little over 7 pounds with scope and aluminum talley mounts. But it is in .300 WSM. With the admitedly over pressure loads I shoot it kills on one end and maims on the other. On the other end of the spectrum I have a Sendero in .300 Win Mag. Those two cartridges are similar, but due to the weight difference felt recoil is a galactic difference.

That’s how they remove a lot of the human element out of a long range shot. My son’s 6.5 creed weighs a shite ton next to my 7mm PRC that I carry in the mountains. I still match him shot for shot out to 1,500 yards.

Sub-MOA isn’t that good for a sniper rifle. At 500 yards that’s within a 5inch circle.

the problem with the entirety of our government procurement system... There are battle tested, military rifles out there that would easily serve the purpose here... So, people like me and you say "why don't you just buy those and piggy back on the bid"...

However, the MIC, which sells to police and Federal LE, will tell you a sniper rifle for the military is not suited for a sniper rifle for the USSS... It is all bullshite...

Oh and 16 pounds, holy fricking shite...
