Looks Like you might be an NSer? Do you guys use trip optimizer? I'm a BNSFer, we almost exclusively use it, under penalty of investigation, so when you say "shitty engineer", i'll retort with shitty AI program to run the trains... and that train make up you cited that was a shitty engineer, maybe...

eBay or FB marketplace a Dell Latitude 5570-80-90 for ~$150, upgrade to a 512gb SSD and RAM to at least 8gb. A fine puter for <$300
Heck, you might find it with those upgrades/specs for that initial $150. ...

We were told the same, nights/weekends/holidays/rain/shine/snow/etc... However, if needed or wanted a day, no questions asked, you just called the caller and marked off/took off. The railroad maintained an extra board(relief workers/extra manpower) for reasonable layoffs of assigned or pool workers...
