Just a reminder for all that it’s Wednesday and the plan for the US government to get our people out of this is: “please go to a website and fill out a form and make your way to the airport surrounded by Taliban. Don’t worry, they are “assisting” with your safe passage to get there”

These are like tour guides stationed around the city.

"Hi, we're from the Taliban and we're here to help"

US sent out a memo to everyone on the list.

It said come to the airport.

But we cannot guarantee your safety.

They left out the Taliban patrols.

I was under the impression we spent 700 billion per year to ensure shite like this doesn’t happen. To think we are at the mercy of some thugs like the Taliban right now! It’s a total embarrassment.

Sadly, this entire situation will probably be forgotten about by 2024.

Mogadishu is the precedent for that.

I'd argue this is a more objective frick up than Mogadishu. I feel like the average person would need a bit of study time to get mad about it, at least beyond "WTF are we doing putting our guys in Somalia during a confusing and chaotic civil war in the first place."

I don't think much nuance is needed to determine "uh, we probably shouldn't have given up our Bagram safe haven and left 10k Americans in a Taliban-controlled hellhole without a plan to get them out." That said, the obfuscation will come (already is), so maybe they'll end up similarly.

Yeah. In Somalia, we didn't have 20 years to hammer out a plan for withdrawal. That was a pretty fluid situation.

This is failure and incompetence at the highest level by a sitting president many have ever witnessed.

And to think, we had control of the massive Bagram Airbase last month, despite thousands of Americans being outside the wire. It would have been very easy to get all civilians out over the last 90-120 days using that facility, rather than Kabul.

Looks like the US bank rolled the shite the out of the Northern Alliance over the last 72 hours because they have regrouped in the Panjshir Valley looking to liberate Afghanistan again.

Look at the trigger discipline in those Taliban US Embassy photos.

Flights are leaving Afghanistan nearly empty

That’s really, really bad news. They’ve got until August 31st until we completely retreat.

Our morons abandoned the airfield in favor of the airport.

This might be the most alarming failure of any. This is almost evil, because I can' imagine anyone being that imcompetent.

Truth be told, the Taliban had as much (or more) to do with securing the airport than our troops have so far.

The surge of people who overran the airport happened before the Taliban got tight control over all roads and were able to reach the airport themselves. They are controlling who does or doesn't enter the airport grounds now. The Afghanis fear them, they don't fear our troops (as it should be). Let the Taliban leave the perimeter they have set up, and we are right back in the mess we were in.

It is a sickening feeling knowing that this whole multi-national effort 100% hinges on the whims of a terrorist organization that we are just supposed to trust. That's the plan. That's the only plan.

This is a very astute observation and common sense tells us that you are correct. The Taliban are in complete control of everything outside of the Kabul airport perimeter, and are exercising restraint from mortar-bombing the runways, which they could easily be doing right now because it's insane to assume that they can't get some 60mm mortars set up.

The Taliban are, to some extent or another, working with the USA on this matter right now.

Yes, that's my guess. In fact, the Biden Admin hopes that the Taliban will continue on this path until 31 Aug. At that point, the USA will declare Mission Accomplished on the Air Evac Mission and the media will praise Tough Guy Joe Biden for staring down the Taliban and daring them to interfere with Air Evac Ops. The Taliban blinked.

That's my guess and it fits in nicely with your assessment.
