I agree but not in 6 months that is ridiculous
The Chinese have been quietly taking over Taiwan for a decade now and for those holdouts who thought the US would save them are now rethinking this based on Afghanistan. Chinese influence in Taiwanese political structure internally are going to be falling like dominos very soon the same way Hong Kong fell.

I would think that there may be 40,000 including people trying to get into the US whether it be interpreters and their families and others, but I have a hard time believing there’s 40,000 current US citizens in Afghanistan. I don’t see any reason for that many to be there, and especially that would have stuck around knowing that the US was pulling out.

It's an unimaginable number. What happens if they Taliban starts rounding them up?

Agree. Even their low number of 15k was surprising. Didn’t realize there were so many Americans still over there.

I've heard the "including people" number is around 80,000 to 200,000 people. There are a lot of dual citizens over there who left the US to help revive their home country so the 40k number doesn't really sound that out of the ordinary to me.

reddit r/afghanistan has very interesting content with eyewitness accounts and opinions from Afghans.

You will never hear an accurate count of how many were murdered.

I can't imagine the feelings and thoughts running through those who are having to rely on a Taliban shite heel to keep his word on not murdering you before you can get out of the country. All because the US government is completely incompetent.

Besides the flight where some people fell off, has there been any further flights out?
That is the bottom line here....are people getting out via flights from the airport?
Don't know if anyone else answered, but yes, there have been flights running in and out of the airport, but for the brief period of time the airport and airspace was shut down yesterday due to too many people on the runway.
The thing to remember is that there are evac planes from countries all over the world trying to use the same small, one runway (maybe two, I've heard that, as well), and the logistics amongst the chaos is the greatest challenge.

Has anyone seen updates on the missing Germans who were supposed to be at the airport when their plane showed up, but weren't? That German plane left with only seven people on board.

Lots of chatter over there about the Northern Alliance getting the band back together in the Panjshir (sp?) region. They're flying the Green/white/black flag of the NA. Also, supposedly the Afghan VP is there calling for any and all resistance fighters to come help out.
If I am an American that hasn't heard from my government and I'm not at the airport, it wouldn't be long before I start making a plan to try and get myself to there. Could be their last hope shortly.

At least we have a US Surveillance and communications intercept plane up flying around Kabul and the nearby mountains several hours this afternoon.
I assume taking high resolution photos and looking for any sign of a Taliban offensive build up to take the airport.
Flew in from Doha. Have not see it over Kabul until today.

I don't know if it has been posted, but here is what the Pentagon Press Sec. had to say in regards to numbers:

The number of Americans trapped in Afghanistan is actually unknown. According to Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby somewhere around 5,000 to 10,000 are known but the number could be 20,000. Those U.S. citizens are not at the airport in Kabul and need to reach the airport in order to be evacuated.

I don't know who said this, but it was quoted at that article I just linked:

He then abandoned our forward bases without giving the Afghans a chance to move in, left supplies out in the open and unguarded, and took away the Afghan army's ability to cover their ground forces from the air (a vital part of the Afghan military's doctrine).
I bet that the Afghani government and military playing musical chairs with their command structure had a lot to do with their inability and miscommunication.
That's assuming, not to be conspiratorial, this wasn't all planned from the start by Afghanistan's top brass to turn over the country to the Taliban as soon as the US left. In which case, we (the US) should have 100% seen it coming.

So the Press Secretary for the Pentagon has pretty much just said that the Taliban can do whatever the frick they want to our citizens so long as they’re NOT AT THE AIRPORT. How many are still out there? Around 10,000. Just go open season on our citizens at this point so long as they’re not within this little box. What’s to prevent the Taliban at this point from holding Americans hostage on YouTube and demand ransom money to deliver them to the airport or they will start lopping off heads? This is a fricking disaster.
