Scientists studying U.S. census rolls from the 1940s have discovered a surprising pattern: White men who grew up one door down from a Black neighbor were more likely to register as Democrats 70 years later — even when compared to other whites from the same neighborhood.

The findings, described in the journal Science Advances, suggest that young boys exposed to people of different backgrounds may grow up to be more liberal-minded adults.

"White men who had a Black neighbor in 1940, compared to white men who did not, are more likely to be associated with racially liberal politics, as indicated by their registration with the Democratic Party even as late as 2017," the authors wrote.

It’s an idea supported by converging lines of evidence from economics, political science, psychology and sociology, said Linda Tropp, a social psychologist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst who was not involved in the study.

every person living in the country that year, likely reached roughly 99% of the population. Workers went door-to-door collecting personal information for residents, including name, age, gender, race, place of birth, years of education, labor earnings and employment status. (These individual records only recently became available: They aren’t made public for 72 years in order to protect the privacy of the people who respond.)

The scientists then used an algorithm to match as many people from the census as they could with voter file data from California in 2005, North Carolina in 2009 and both states plus Nebraska in 2017. These three were the only states where citizens provide their place of birth when registering to vote, making it easier to match files. But in 1940, these same folks were living all over the U.S., providing the scientists with near-blanket coverage of the country.

The scientists used the registered voters’ declared political party as a proxy for political leanings. They focused on men, who typically kept the same name throughout their lives. Women, who often changed their surnames after marriage, were harder to track.

Because census workers went door-to-door, residents’ names would appear right by their next-door neighbors on the list, two names away from their neighbor who lived two homes down, and so on. This meant that the scientists could get an extremely fine-grained look at which individuals had an immediate neighbor of another race.

After examining the records for more than 650,000 white men, the researchers found that those who lived next door to Black neighbors in their youth were 1.5 to 4.2 percentage points more likely be registered Democrats in the 2005/2009 data, and 2.8 to 5.3 percentage points more likely to be Democrats than their peers in the 2017 data. They were also less likely to be registered Republicans by about the same amount.

Fascinating study. I would think the opposite would be true

What this study finds is that if there is a 20 house street, the 2 white boys living on either side of the one black family grow up to be far more likely to be a democrat than the white boys on the street not living next door to the black family

Of course the study already assumes that Republicans are racist and democrats are intelligent and tolerant.

Feels like every study we've seen over the last 5 years. Some massively biased and absurd assumption that falls victim to confirmation bias.

You could argue they vote Democrat because they are MORE racist, i.e., they believe black people have no agency and need constant government intervention. They can't even begin to guess or confirm the nature of the neighborly relationship. Also, it could prove political choices are more cultural than racial, such as they vote dem because they grew up in the same culture, as opposed to study's assumption which is dem voting is a signifier of more racial tolerance.

This study, as usual, with any sociology study, is massively biased.

White dems were intimidated by said blacks and later cucked therefore they became liberals.

It’s science really.

Because they grew up in urban environments. That makes sense to me.

Of course they are more likely to be democrats. They are more likely to be criminals too.

If a white person was living next to a black neighbor 70 years ago, they grew up poor.

Now let's see the study on blacks who lived next door to whites and are more conservative than the average black! I'll bet you'll see a more obvious increase there than with this study.

5-6 years ago.. the Democrat party is the party that says black people are too dumb to get voter ids.

Democrats, msm, universities and corporations had a massive campaign...preaching about that shite.

Going by that poll, the white boys who grew up next to black people... became racist pieces of shite.

Don't get me wrong.. while they are racist pieces of shite, they are heralded by society as being enlightened..for their belief of black people being dumb.

That would seem to be the main correlation here

I grew up next to a black family. We get along well. They were really just like us, maybe even more country. I passed most of that family early this morning as they were running their horses down the road. They are much better horsemen than I am.

I have no idea if they vote R or D, but I've eaten at their table and they have eaten at mine. I would defend any of them as I'm pretty sure they would defend any of my family too.

It's not a black/white thing like the media tells us.

Because they were from a poor family that thought socialism would take care of them?

exactly,

if you live next door to upper class blacks, they are more likely to be republicans

if you live next door to lower class blacks, both them and you are more likely to fall into the dems' class warfare trap

1-5% insignificant amount: study was a waste of time. The end goal of this was to show what? That it's right to believe in leftist fairy tales?

Any publication. That capitalized “Black” but not “white” should not be taken serious.

Fascinating study

Is it?

Or maybe it's that if you're a white person living in this country and your neighbors are black, then there's a good chance you have a bad case of the poors.
And if that is the case, then maybe you and your family are also on the govenment dole.
If those 2 things are true, then of course you would be a dem! Why would you not support free eveything?!

You understand there are about 30 ways to skew a "study" like that?

The entire utopian premise of this "study" appears tailor made to an already predetermined conclusion.

So you're saying there's something to "There goes the neighborhood?"

I love when people assume living next to blacks makes you poor. There are several black families that live near me. They are all hard working landowners. Hell, I bet half of my black neighbors own tractors that cost more than your house

But go ahead with your stereotypes, that will surely correct any division we are seeing...asshat
