What a monumental screwup

Starbucks struggles to quell outrage over ‘Tank Day’ ad campaign that evoked massacre in South Korea

The coffee chain drew backlash with a marketing campaign for a tumbler that is widely perceived as mocking those who died for South Korea’s pro-democracy movement

quote:

SEOUL, South Korea — The head of Starbucks in South Korea apologized again Tuesday as the company faces sustained public backlash against a marketing campaign widely perceived as mocking those who died for the country’s pro-democracy movement.

The coffee chain, which has been in South Korea since 1999, had planned to start selling a large tumbler it calls a “tank” May 18, declaring it “Tank Day.” May 18 is also the anniversary of a 1980 crackdown by South Korea’s former military dictatorship, in which hundreds of pro-democracy activists in the city of Gwangju were killed or injured by troops, tanks and helicopters.

They don't frick around...

"The head of Starbucks Korea (SCK Company) is currently vacant following the dismissal of former CEO Sohn Jeong-hyun. Sohn was fired by the parent conglomerate, Shinsegae Group, in May 2026 following public outrage over a controversial "Tank Day" marketing campaign.

They're the absolute most oblivious people I've ever had personal experience with. I wouldn't say they're horrible people, but they're definitely safety liabilities. They don't even possess a zero sense of self-awareness, their sense is clearly in the negatives.

Where do you get your information from? I feel like you might be talking out of your arse.
The South Koreans are some of the friendliest people I've met.
Stationed there, place was safe and my family loved it.

And you’re basing this off of…?

Once you understand North Korean leadership, you understand South Korea.

East Germans built tunnels to escape. North Koreans build tunnels to attack.
