Yeah, but this article was about teacher shortage. Gifted kids aren't in those classes. The GT kids have LOTS of teachers begging for those jobs.

Being a gifted teacher still requires special education certification, you can't just say I want to teach the smart students.

Also TVA (talented and visual arts) are also classified as special education student and have an IEP. In a lot of district the talented art teach will service multiple schools.

Lol you couldn’t be more wrong. Doctors send home a checklist for teachers to fill out and then bingo they are well on their way to an ADHD diagnosis. It happens all the time

They’ve added every conceivable ill under the sun to the definition of “disabled”. And some parents use it to game the system for money. Look up “Crazy Checks”.

A student with a diagnosed disability isn’t 504; parents know how to play the system and they are always looking for additional “diagnosis” with certain pediatricians or psychologists who throw out ADHD, anti depressants, and sedatives like candy. If parents truly understood the long term damage many of these drugs do to children who don’t need them they would greatly reconsider their short term financial benefits

Single moms "need" the extra government income.

Parents are lazy and want a quick fix for their active child. It's easier to drug them into behaving than actually raise them properly.

By requires, you mean that the school district hires someone who will eventually get certified and away we go.

Big Pharma. Big Medicine.

Everyone has a problem that can only be solved by classifying it and treating them in special ways.

Don't forget this includes 3&4 year olds with speech problems. I had 3 that qualified for speech, and only one was in it the whole time with a brain injury.

My wife works in the school system. The accommodations that must be implemented to legally process the SPED stuff is mind blowing. There is literally zero way a teacher can teach the class and follow the educational plan for each of these kids. We are taling 100s in a large school And these parents are highly educated in regard to the rights of their child as it pertains to this component. Ill keep my comments to myself as to the reason why.

It's like everything else in the world. Money given for good reason, but there will be some who abuse it.

I’m assuming he’s talking about people living below the poverty line who qualify for SSI.

My kids both have IEPs for speech so they technically could be classified as being in special education but they only get speech therapy. We haven’t gotten this mysterious money that the other poster mentioned, either.

I believe every one of the kids in my son's IEP group in school were on the spectrum here at his school in NC. Don't think ADHD alone is going to land a lot of kids in special education.

My SIL teaches problem children in the Arkansas Public Elementary School System. These aren't just a bunch of ADHD kids. Autism, BPD, etc.

I think this thread is just a bunch of people saying crap just because they hear other people say crap. You people just think these disabled kids had too much sugar... in fact, most have actually real diagnosed mental issues.. not ADHD..

Hell, I could be wrong too. But that is my personal experience with all this.
