I don't really disagree with what he said and don't think it's that provocative , either.

I have 2 family members with an arse ton of opportunity and yet, really just don't want to work. Its true with some, but obviously not all. Going to be hard to change and it will take an intervention type of effort to fix it. IMHO.

In his defense, he wants to do away with the war on drugs.

Unless I am mistaken, I think you are confusing Paul Ryan for Rand Paul on this particular issue.

It's going to take some time to break the cycle that we're currently in, but I believe most want to work. Unfortunately too many found work in the underground economy, served jail time and aren't very employable.

Book it RS...most DO NOT want to work; especially at the rate that their skill/motivation pays. They will ask or demand a handout but have little or not intention of pursuing a lifelong career.

And the 'they' I referring to, are many in my own extended family. When people grow up laying on the couch, playing video games, watching the tube and talking low level bull*^$#& with all the basics of life handed to em'...that pretty much imprints them for life.

Throw in drugs...and it's a done deal.

There have been plenty of cultures throughout human history who have failed for a ton of different reasons. Affluence...does not create strong individuals; it creates weak ones.

Ryan has to say what the has to...but I can remember Pat Buchanan telling the truth: "We've lost a generation". And that was a generation ago.

Earth 2014.

Makes you kind of wonder why Obama as the first black president, hasn't really addressed this issue.

Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) called Ryan's remark "deeply offensive."

"My colleague Congressman Ryan's comments about 'inner city' poverty are a thinly veiled racial attack and cannot be tolerated," Lee said in an email to reporters. "Let's be clear, when Mr. Ryan says 'inner city,' when he says 'culture,' these are simply code words for what he really means: 'black.'"

Yeah, white dude can't state the obvious, it's offensive

I mean when you see poor people walking around, and doing nothing in the middle of the afternoon, you do wonder "What do these people do for a living?"

I highly doubt they all work night shifts.

No, truth is truth... work ethic has been lost right along with fatherhood.

Why is this offensive I have no clue.

Barbara doesn't live in the inner city and it's not directed at all people, but the culture as a whole in the inner city? well, it's pretty close to truth what he said..if people aren't saying it, I bet most are thinking it.

Educated, and "work hard" typically do not live in the inner city by choice...true or false?

I think its about the acceptance of single parent homes
Acceptance? The government ENCOURAGES it by only giving Aid To Dependent Families (welfare check) to single mother homes. If they gave it to families on a temporary basis with the father in home, we might not be on our fourth generation of single mothers.

Does an alcoholic want to be sober? Dependency is addictive. Breaking the addiction requires opportunity.

Opportunity is everywhere if you are black. More opportunity than America affords to most. Blacks don't have to score as well for college admission, promotions, etc. They can be voted to office based on race with paper thin resumes. There are places held for them and only them. And if they happen to be conservative, their opinions carry more weight than their fairer counterparts.

While opportunity abounds, examples and encouragement do not. I lived and went to school in the "hood" for a few years and heard the few kids that tried get taunted. "Acting white" was what they were doing if they spoke the king's english or tried in school.
