So, Mrs. Zwin's car was stolen out of our garage

She always leaves her keys in the car when in our garage. I've asked her not to, just in case someone got into our garage somehow. It helps when I actually remember to close the garage door when I get home late at night, but that's another issue entirely.
Police actually pulled the car over the next morning (before we had noticed and reported it stolen), but they took off and the police lost them. Once we reported it stolen, they said they would approach a similar situation with guns drawn.
Anyway, a week later, we get a call (at 3:30 am) from a nice policeman in MSP, asking her to identify some contents in the car. Was seen in the middle of "suspicious behavior" (never explained) and the driver fled on foot.
They end up tracing him via a backpack left in the car. He's a 16 year old escapee from a juvenile detention facility (not jail, per se) here in Duluth. Wanted to get back to where he is from in the cities. Should have dumped the car, but would probably have been found anyway.)
I'm all for facing the consequences of your actions, and he should. That being said, "Jack" did not get put on this path by himself. His parents failed him, in all likelihood.
With all this arguing over police and their handling of dangerous situations, it is beyond frustrating that so little attention is paid to the issues that start a life of crime.
My dad never knew his father. He was shot and killed before my dad was born. His mom died when he was 12. He spent his teen years with his uncle and grandmother, but slept under a lean-to in the yard because there was no room in the house. He became an Eagle Scout (which inspired one of my sons to do the same). He made mistakes in raising me and my brother, but all of us dads do. He was always there, though.
It is one of the greatest failures of society, IMO, when parents do not set their kids up with a stable home.
Take color out of it. It's already a big problem with the black community, but it's a ticking time bomb across all demographics.
If you are a parent, do your damn job. You brought that child into this world. It's your responsibility to lead and teach them.

Because he is 16 he'll get a slap on the wrist and grow up to commit worse crimes

Mate, great story and Ima let you finish, but you live in one of the key swing counties in the nation. What are you seeing and hearing in Duluth this election cycle versus this time in 2016?
More Trump signs and voters? Less?
More Sleepy signs and voters than Crooked? less?

Not sure what point you think you are making, but it's fairly well established this is an issue in the highest-crime demographic in America. My point is that crime and a lack of fathers are highly correlated.
Way to be an arse and deflect from the larger issue.

If I could wave a magic wand, I'd have more black baby-daddies become FATHERS. It would solve so much of our problems. That and if Adam Schiff could change from being a 100% douchebag.

How old a lady is your wife?

Our vehicles sit in our driveway with keys and usually wallet/purse in them.

i thought you people's in Minnesota weren't going to call the cops on the brothers that steal stuff. Afraid the cops might shoot someone on the way to his med school class.
keep your neighbors safe
You should go to jail for entrapment. Garage door up, keys in the car, probably left your pistol and some money in the glove compartment.

Guilty as charged.
I've been known to do this a few times. Frustrating as hell, and I just thought it was a "getting old" thing.
Finally occurred to me the next day. When she goes through the door from the garage to the house, it's always because she just drove in. Half the time I do it, though, I am coming in or our while I am doing projects. I walk in and out of the garage door on a regular basis for things like mowing the yard, cutting wood, etc., so it's not hard wired in me to hit that Genie every time.
That, plus the Mellow Corn I'd been sipping on that night.

If he was already in juvenile detention, he did something pretty bad to get there. They rarely send kids to juvenile detention unless they are multiple time repeat offenders or they have committed a major felony. And if he escaped (a felony) and committed another major felony (grand theft auto), he's going to get more than a slap on the wrist in all likelihood. Not sure about Texas, but here in Tennessee, juveniles can be sentenced far beyond them reaching the age of 18. They simply are detained at the juvenile detention center and are transferred to big boy prison once they age out.

Cliff notes... All responsibility has been taken out of society...until it is too late..

I'll add onto SirWinston's request... what's the vibe in MN? Trump or Biden gonna win there? I'm kind of banking on MN's 10 EV's to offset AZ or even WI.

It seems like there are more Trump and less Biden signs in the Democratic People's Republic itself, and Stauber is all but a lock (I think) to carry the district. How much that translates to actual poll numbers in Duluth and the state as a whole is still a concern. Lots of people still have that "OK with or like his policies, but hate his behavior" thing. Don't get me started on how they can justify the Dems after all the shite we've seen.
I drive through Wisconsin a lot. Literally criss-crossed the state yesterday. Baws in the countryside don't just have yard signs up. They have 4' X 8' boards (professionally printed) out in front of the homesteads. Didn't see nearly as much of this in 2016.
That being said, the urban votes are the problem. Groupthink there is a veritable cancer.
