Live Seafood Consumption in Japan

Ikizukuri

Ikizukuri, meaning "prepared alive," is a Japanese culinary technique where sashimi is made from live seafood. Commonly used animals include:

Fish
Octopus
Shrimp
Lobster

The dish is often served with the head intact, allowing diners to see the gill movements, which can be controversial due to concerns about animal suffering.
Odorigui

Odorigui, or "dancing eating," involves consuming live seafood while it is still moving. Typical examples include:

Katsu ika odori-don: A living squid served over rice that moves when soy sauce is added.

Shirouo-no-odorigui: Goby fish that dance while being eaten.

Odori ebi: Dancing shrimp.

This practice emphasizes freshness and is considered a delicacy in Japan.

The kids will love this. Give them bowls of bugs and worms.

"Bon Appétit"

I remember my elementary school days. The food was excellent, especially on Wednesday. That was beef stew day. And we had homemade sour dough rolls every day.

I love Japanese food. They are all skinny minus the wrestler dudes. The women have beautiful skin.

Ignorance.

That isn’t what they eat daily.

It isn’t even a common dish.

I find it funny how we reject the eating habits of one of the healthiest and longest lived countries because “the children won’t like it”.

Children are dumb.

What they want is irrelevant.

If you control what they are allowed to eat, they will eat what you put in front of them.

And as I said, we could use it as a model. We don't have to actually serve Japanese food.

Seems to be worth the effort

Or we could get our kids to memorize dates for half the school day instead I guess

I think you missed my point

The Japanese can do this

We cannot because the people who would work in cafeterias in the US can't and even if they could, wouldn't.

Japan is nationalist AF.

it’s about educating them and promoting a sustainable food culture that leads to longstanding benefits for the entire nation.

I love this idea for the U.S. But we have too many leaders that are absent of an America First nationalist mindset. Until we can finally change our priorities inward we will continue to neglect our own people.

Japan focuses on itself. America focuses on illegal immigrants and spending billions if not trillions on the welfare of other nations.

We can't emulate Japan until we start focusing on ourselves a little more.

Japan is closing schools because they aren’t having children. I guess they can afford it because they are having fewer and fewer kids every year.

No, but it requires a unified/homogenous mindset.

That is where the USA fails. Our two major groups cannot agree on the most basic of facts.

It would likely never happen here because corporate interests would block it

Can't upset the powers that be at Domino's or Subway. Their bottom line is more important than the health and well being of our society.

Mmmm, reminds me of soy burgers and french fried in early to mid 80s high school..

And all meeting at 8:30 am for a pre standardized test orange juice and krispy kreme donut.

No wonder i lost concentration by 9:30...

It’s a good way to get skinny fast. Yummy.

The additives in American processed foods are the real problem.

There is no other country in the world-none-that makes you feel worse upon returning to America, then Japan. Having lived in rural Japanese homes with two Japanese families and knowing the culture, it is a punch to the gut when you have to come back to our degree of dysfunction. Diet is just one area.

Again, it doesn't have to be Japanese food. And that wouldn't be an option.

According to a small minority here, there is no reason to even attempt to change this paradigm.

Has everything to do with the topic at hand. Also the ethnicity as well. They are a homogenous society with deeply held shared values. Food is not going to solve that in the United States. Our political leaders (Left and Right) want us divided.

Apparently folks in this thread are under the impression local public schools are instead federalized.

There is a huge difference between the US and Japan from a culture perspective. Japanese people do not have the same sense of entitlement on lunches, nor do they have the same attitude towards education as the US has.

There are many things that other countries do better than U.S. due to culture and demographics.
