So I work in Cali, and it's come up a couple times recently that I didn't have gender pronouns in my work email signature.

I also recently got called out at our end of the year team meeting for not using jazz hands.

This is 100% honest I don't care if you believe it or not.

Jazz hands story: We had a farewell to 2020 team meeting, and at the end we were all supposed to cheer. Being that there were 50 people on the call, We were all muted except the presenters. but apparently during the cheering section the facilitator (director's admins asst) took a screenshot and called me out for not celebrating with jazz hands. She made us all do it again, because apparently she "wanted to add the picture to the end of the year newsletter".

Well now there's been a department-wide email (third one) about adding gender pronouns to our email signature. Of course I don't want to do it, but The job market is a little thin.

I know if the director asked me to stand for the pledge of allegiance I could refuse and would have a lawsuit if I was fired for it. But I don't know, am I protected from being fired for not using gender pronouns?

Tell them you don’t believe in pronouns as they stifle your individualism and your nouns are potato and tomato

When I get a resume with gender pronouns on it, I toss it.

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine Cali state law would make it tough to fire someone.

The issue usually isn't getting fired though, it's them making your work life unimaginably difficult and trying to make you quit.

You're right to try and carefully navigate this.

I wish I had more for you. Good luck.

Have you considered moving out of Cali? Even being admitted to a mental health institute would be a leap towards sanity for you at this point.

You should move out of California immediately

That would be my suggestion

Just add bro/bruh to your email signature and if anyone asks, say those are your pronouns.

So if my name was John Smith what would my gender pronoun email signature be?

I am confused.

I actually might do this but I'm trying to figure out a different way to comply without complying without being obvious. But I think anything besides the he/his/him will be a red flag.

Just type a bunch of random letters after your name.

I agree.

While their language might sound ridiculous as bro/bra/bruh to you, they know how to speak it and coming up with something like that will make you stick out.

Worse than sticking out, they'll claim you're mocking trans people. Those trans people will come forward and claim not to feel safe with you working in the same building, and will refuse to come into work. This has happened on a lot of job sites and college campuses, and, to my knowledge, almost always ends one way - with you getting fired.

Make up some wacky shite and dare them to call you out on it.

ETA: Whatever you choose, say it is meaningful to you. Act offended if you are questioned about it.

So in 2020, I got married, took a job transfer, wife got pregnant, and she was able to squeak a kid out just before the end of 2020.(yay taxes)

But with my wife at home with the kid, I can't fall on the sword for principles. I'm trying to just imagine it like "flair" in office space. (Stupid crap that everyone has to do to work there, versus political subjugation)

Put what I wrote on my old Twatter account:

"George Floyd's pronouns are was/were".

do you have a problem with them referring to you as he/him/his?

I don't get the issue. You're staying "traditional," so what principle are you trying to make a stand for?
