With the economy so incredibly dependent on continued debt, a consumer debt bubble popping would bring about a very strong recession which would also last a long time. Consumers losing access to credit in such an environment necessarily slashes economic activity.
MAGA would get the blame, and the liberal fascists would get voted in. Nation over.

820 checking in. I use mine once a year and pay it off as soon as it shows on my balance just to keep them from cancelling it.
Give me 8% and maybe ill put my limit to use.
I wonder what the numbers are for people who only have one for scoring purposes.
I got a secured capital one after i got out of 2008 debt in 2012, a quicksilver as soon as they let me, and a USAA for the free balance transfer and 0% introductory. Secured cancelled on me for not using it, the quicksilver will do the same eventually.
Its almost like you need to make it worth peoples while to rack up a bunch of charges. Not about to borrow 15K and pay you back 20. 17 sounds fair.

The canary in the coal mine, at least to me, has been car loans and credit cards. The next is bankruptcies.

Another thing I hit on in previous posts was that it didn't matter who won last year, they were going to face a recession during their term.
If it happens before mid-terms, it's likely to get blamed on the GOP. Regardless of which side wins/loses, the popular push is going to be to increase federal programs (both in funding and in scope) to help people get through it.
That, of course, will only make things worse as it will create even more debt spending.
And thus the paradox: everyone wants the problem fixed, but no one is willing to take on the burden of being part of the fix. Unfortunately, math DGAF what people want so it's going to happen one way other another.

You don’t have to be a bloody communist to see that 1% of the population having 90% of the wealth is going to destabilize society. The very rich use tax shelters, lawyers, and bought politicians to play by different rules from common folk.

If you don’t treat a CC like a debit card and pay it off every month, I advise against it.
If you can be disciplined though, it’s worth using for points or cash back even though those things aren’t tons.
Put things on cards to maximize cashback/points, then auto draft to pay it off monthly.
Zero interest & a 2-6% discount on everything. Of course this takes discipline & the ability to budget

Not true. People with jobs and without debt will do just fine.

Based on the analyses provided, the top 1% of US households hold approximately 30-31% of the nation's wealth. The most direct answer comes from two sources: one stating that the top 1% owned 31% of the nation's assets at the end of 2024 [1], while another reports that the top 1% holds 30.3% of total US wealth according to the Federal Reserve [2].

Who all here in this thread, with a show of hands, can honestly say that they have ZERO credit cards and ZERO credit card debt?
I am like this. I have enough in savings to cover pretty much anything expensive that might go out, like an AC unit or a car engine. I invest everything that I can beyond this. If I have to buy a refrigerator or something I just buy it then replenish my savings until I reach that goal and go back to investing.

The anarchist in me, wants to see it all fall down. Specifically Credit Cards.
They can make your life mieserable if you use it irresponsible.

They will do better but the "just fine" depends on if the job is still there. Things could get pretty ugly.

I’ve seen some crazy debt in my line of work. One client had a 400k mortgage, 200k heloc balance, 120k in credit card debt, 40k in peer to peer loans and roughly 70k in auto loans. Made about 400k per year.
WTF
Had another client who made similar income and he just stopped paying his credit card debt and those frickers forgave the debt. Sure, his credit score sucks but he got out of paying over 60k in cc debt.

When you do Net worth percentiles of Americans you need to remember those averages include black women. Wealth Snapshot

Single Black women without children have a median wealth of just $200 – but for single Black mothers that figure drops to $0
