I knew we were lacking in this area but these numbers are almost not believable

Us becoming competitive in shipbuilding would require either massive deregulation (will never happen) or massive amount of steroids on the Jones act (would be economically cripping).

We can't compete. Their material and labor are exponentially cheaper, not to mention their government subsidies. We can build warships and submarines other countries can only dream of. Mass production of merchant ships here is dead and I don't see it ever being globally competitive.

What would you consider as them and what would you consider as “we”? What pronouns do you use?

1,800, huh?

Were they 'special' ships? Like the minesweepers from Godzilla Minus 1?

Until now. Those who say that something is impossible are also the ones that view the impossible with awe. Yoda sticks his finger out and says “you can do or do not, there is no try”. Anything is possible with the might of a motivated public.

I was hoping we would be building those giant 110,000 hp container ship engines and the ships they go in.

This isn’t really new, it’s been known for a while.

The barriers created by the Jones Act are tough to get by. I have some buddies that worked the Hanwah Ocean deal and it was a fricking nightmare.

Ok let’s unpack this a little.

1. What qualifies as a “ship”? We build all of our own military ships.

2. What’s the type of ship China is building? What’s the quality?

3. If we’re talking military, their ships are no where near as advanced as ours.

This is a little sensationalist to me.

Some of the newer technologies have made a lot of warships very vulnerable to swarm attacks by remotely controlled drones and missiles.

South Korea builds a shitload of ships and EU countries build a fair number as well.

While I don't know that we need to be building 1,800 per year, I do think it would be a good idea to have the capacity to build a few hundred commercial ships. Even if it requires some subsidies.

Obviously the discussion is about commercial ships.

If that isn't obvious to you...

Well this has very little to do with military ships in the first place so congrats on “unpacking” something that didn’t need to be unpacked.
