3. During the legal challenge period, just go to essential bare bones. Minimal groceries, hours and staff.

They could add a verse to cover this situation.

Here it is:

To the music of Hotel California.

On a dark city street, San Francisco stands, Progressive lawmakers with bills in their hands. They said, “You can check out anytime you like, But you can never close your grocery store life.”

Six months’ notice, they demand with a grin, Or face lawsuits and battles they’re sure to win. The Grocery Protection Act, their latest decree, Ensures supermarkets stay open, you see.

Whole Foods tried to escape, but they were caught, Vagrants throwing food, chaos they wrought. Emergency calls, arrests at the door, They closed Market Street, couldn’t take it anymore.

“Welcome to the Golden State,” they say, “Where grocery stores must forever stay.” In the land of palm trees and ocean breeze, Businesses struggle, caught in this freeze.

“An even better idea now,” they claim, As corporate giants play their high-stakes game. Seniors and families left in the fray, As Safeway sells land for condos, they say.

So raise a banana, let the lawsuits begin, For grocery store closures, it’s a sin. California dreaming, but reality bites, In this Hotel California of endless fights.

I would stay open but draw down the inventory to bare essentials and canned goods.

Stupid rule and probably unconstitutional but it would be easy to get around compliance.

They raised the minimum wage and fast food places started automating (kiosk instead of order taker).

This will lead to a new industry. To enter a grocery store you must be a "verified customer", your ID scanned and you are allowed in. Then you bring your shopping cart into a checkout room that the door locks behind you and you get everything scanned and pay for it and the exit door opens. You either pay for the merchandise or you have to leave it and exit without anything.

Similar to entering some high end retailers. They buzz you in and out.

Just make it a clearance store for almost out of date and damages goods, like Dirt Cheap or Ollies.

Exactly this. Just don’t refill the aisles. I’m assuming they could also just start running weird hours like open from 9a to 11a every day.

only 18 months ago, our resident libs would tell you that this is all overblown... that "traveling to San Fran and Seattle were great destinations for culture and enlightenment".

Well that iss a good way to never get a store built or opened.
We will penalize you and people can file suit for you closing.

Would it be cheaper for them to have a pick up only location where a customer orders online or at a kiosk and employees gather groceries and bring to customer after payment?

One has to believe that at some point voters in Cali will wake up.

They won’t. California should really be separated into 3 parts. The northern part would be red at least.
