And in the grand scheme of things, that wasn’t that long ago.

Crazy how things change.

Technically, they still are allies. The only people creating real conflict between the US and Russia/China are a small number of powerful politicians.

We were never allies with Russia. We lent them weaponry, fuel and supplies until we entered the war.

Enemies of your enemies are NOT your friends, just temporary teammates.

Russia was the Soviet Union at the time and were attacked by a common enemy

And China wasn’t the communist China they are today. It was literally an entirely different government. And they were also being attacked by a common enemy.

It wasn’t like we were besties back then either

They were a named member of the “Big Four” (U.S., U.K., China and Soviet Union….France dropped out lol) which was the alliance literally named the Allied powers. It was as such until the entire war, both theaters, was over. Am I missing your point? Because it appears as if you are incorrect.

You know we are still allies with that Chinese government, correct?

The Chinese government we were allies with is the rightful Chinese government that is currently located in Taiwan.

Meh. With the Soviet Union it was always an “enemy of my enemy” sort of arrangement. When it came to China, we were allied with that segment of the Chinese government that became what we know of today as Taiwan.

Right. We have NEVER been allied with the ChiComms. Ever.

The Russians, only temporarily because of the desire to beat Germany. A large portion of the population and the military wanted to keep going to Moscow after Germany surrendered.

Of course we supported the Soviet Union. Our government had already been infiltrated by communists.

The USSR wasn't really a big ally during WWII. China was but they were a third world country at the time.

The US was already anticipating a conflict with USSR as early as 1944

When you have enemy forces deep in your homeland you find a way to make friends with those that might be able to help.

This is a very incorrect assessment. The United States under FDR gave the USSR weapons from before we entered the war and all the way throughout the war. We never held back due to concern over Soviet strength. We spoke glowingly about "Uncle Joe" to win over the American populace to the monster that we allied ourselves with. We covered up the Katyn massacre so the Soviets could save face with the Poles. We fully honored agreements to not negotiate with Germany outside of universal Soviet, U.S., British agreement in terms. We allowed the USSR to occupy all of Eastern Europe, including half of Germany. We pardoned the Soviets for their illegal and naked aggression with their invasions and occupations of Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland, which all occurred before any hostilities with Germany. We gave the Soviets control over all the states whose national sovereignty was supposedly the entire purpose of the war with Germany to begin with. FDR's regime had Soviet spies and sympathizers throughout, including some of his high advisors.

The ugly truth is that the United States absolutely was allied with the USSR in WWII and only Churchill towards the end began to demonstrate any concern with the manner in which it appeared to be playing out, yet he himself was more than willing to make that bargain when the war was not going in Britain's favor.

It's a shining example of how you cannot truly control the direction a war or its aftermath will take you. War and its domestic and geopolitical repercussions are unpredictable and even when you win you may find yourself in a worse position than had you resorted to alternative means in the first place. WWII should present itself as a case study for extreme caution and trepidation in intervention for political gain but sadly we do not view the war critically enough due to its position in American folklore painting us as the most noble and magnanimous entity during this period.

Russia initially allied with Germany to gain part of Poland, Finland and the Baltic States. Germany stabbed them in the back; thus putting Russia and the Brits both fighting Hitler. It became an alliance out of necessity, not out of friendship.

After the war Russia refused to honor many of their promises and kept the countries they conquered.

China was different. In WWII they were fighting the Japs for several years before we were heavily involved. They had two factions, the govt. in place and the Commies. They both fought the Japs.

Upon the completion of the war they fought each other to the point where the govt. was reduced to holding Taiwan with the Commies everything else. We never allied ourselves or aided the new Commie govt. In fact we fought them in Korea.

Personally, I'd like to us to divest ourselves from the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and with the 2nd Yom Kippur War. I'd like it more than anything.

What you say is true to some degree but I can assure you Russia and China are in conflict with us directly and have been for over 100 years. I work in this field (DOD contracting).

Even when the Soviet Union dissolved Russia was still trying to get a foothold over us. Our quarrel should not be with them but they (and China too for sure) would love to take everything we have if they ever possibly could.

They are the 3 world powers at this point in time, if they were all allied together, no country would dare stand against any of them. It's not like their major foes right now anyway. It's just that when balances of power change, relations between countries will change too. The US, Russia, and China shouldn't go go war with each other any time soon, either. The fact that the US is funding Ukraine's war with Russia is all about money being trickled back US politicians. That may be the world's worst kept secret. Everybody knows it by now, and those that are benefitting will pay the price eventually. Russia is "siding" with Iran, but that's more a matter of circumstance at this point.

Technically I would say no.

Russia has revolution us and Europe sent the White army to defeat them. We backed the wrong horse. We sent arms to help them kill Germans during WWII. The Cold War.

China is so weak before the revolution that they cannot expel us and other countries from parts of China. The US backs Chiang Kai Shek vs Mao. We lose. Cold War.

I don't see anything that is even remotley close to "allies still"
