The Soviets were Allies on paper, but we let them do their thing while we did ours. It’s not like our troops fought side-by-side with them like we did with the Brits, Canadians, Australians, etc. a true case of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”
In China’s case, we were allied with Chang Kai-shek’s nationalist Kuomintang government, and not Mao’s communists. We gave them material support, and in some cases did fight side-by-side with them. What is Taiwan now is who we were actually allied with.

Well FDR was surrounded by Communists during his Presidency.
