Roseanne's tweets may have been politically incorrect, but they were not racist

Valerie Jarret unequivocally does look like a character from Planet of the Apes.

I've seen plenty of white people who have that same monkey style face.

Calling Trump an Orangutan is also not racist.

Saying Soros was a Nazi, while apparently incorrect, was not racist.

Roseanne seems like a moron who shite in her own nest, but let's be accurate in our word usage.

I am disappointed in professional journalists and TV networks misusing words on a daily basis.

Once you stop holding the modern MSM to any journalistic standard, you won't be disappointed any more when they fail to live up to it.

Saying a black person looks like an ape is going to be perceived as racist regardless of the intent. Saying something like that on Twitter is beyond idiotic and anybody stupid enough to do so deserves whatever fallout occurs.

Stupid games, stupid prizes, etc.

I'm not defending her. I specifically stated she's a moron. And I don't really give a shite what idiots perceive. You can say she was stupid, uncouth, unprofessional, rude, abhorrent, politically incorrect, social unacceptable, etc., but racist she was not.

I also don't care that her show got canceled. I never watched it, or the original. I don't think she's funny at all. ABC has the right to cancel her for any reason.

I don't expect the unwashed masses to know what words mean, but I do expect professional journalists to know.

It's not splitting hairs at all. The definition is clear.

Webster's

quote:

Definition of racism
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

2 a : a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles
b : a political or social system founded on racism

3 : racial prejudice or discrimination

I agree with you. Journalists calling this tweet "racist" so matter-of-factly, shows such a poor understanding of the term.

Her message was in awfully bad taste, and perhaps borderline racist. But hard to call it as full blown racist.

I just find it bizarre that you think this perceived technicality is worthy of digging your heels in over, especially given your reported indifference towards the ultimate outcome of her posts. And it's not like we're talking about some random insult towards a black person being labeled as racist, it was a comparison with a long and well known history of carrying racist undertones. Whether Roseanne meant it that way or not is really not a relevant distinction to those without an agenda.

It's so bizarre and insignificant a distinction in fact that it makes one question your intent.

And associating black people with apes has been a common way to imply that they are inferior, less evolved subhumans lacking the intellectual capabilities of humans (like the Italians throwing bananas a few years back).

Of all the different terms people try to argue that their usage has racist connotations, ape is one of the few that is quite obvious and well-known.

Now maybe Roseanne didn't mean it in that way, but then her own stupidity isn't much of an excuse either.

When you've already tweeted that a black lady is "a man with big swinging ape balls", you kinda lose the benefit of the doubt the next time

You think the actual meaning of words is a technicality?

Being called a racist in today's society is about the worst thing you can be called. You don't think it's important to be accurate to determine if the person ACTUALLY said something racist?

What if someone calls Obama "Jug Ears" or "Hussein".

Are these racist terms to you?

What if someone calls Elizabeth Warren "Pocahontas" or some other similar nickname?

(FTR, none of those terms are racist)

And also, I'm not asking for every Tom, Dick and Tyrone to understand the meaning of these very difficult words. I'm talking about professionals that should know better.

It's the very definition of splitting hairs. Calling black people apes has long been a comparison with racially discriminatory intent. You've devoted a thread to the premise that that comparison isnt inherently racist (instead of just usually intended to be racist) is a worthwhile distinction.

You say anything about a monkey or ape in the same sentence with a person’s name who is black or part black and it’s going to be perceived as racist. I don’t believe she’s that stupid so I have to believe she wanted her show canceled.
