Let me explain this. First off, it’s not the “white man” who rejects these residencies. It’s all American MDs of every background.

This is an internal medicine residency. Primary care is the least prestigious type of medicine to go into. Internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, etc. Americans seek higher paying, higher prestige specialties. 40% of internal medicine residencies are filled by international medical graduates. By comparison, orthopedics or neurosurgery residencies are 95% American and only 5% foreign.

The point is, Americans aren’t seeking an internal medicine residency at Rochester General. They’re seeking urology, anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, etc.

That’s why if you look up the family doctors in your area, many have foreign-sounding names, but if you look up specialists, they all sound American.

It’s not some conspiracy to replace American MDs. Americans get the best opportunities and foreigners take what they can get.
