Guys, this is bait. Americans generally match to more prestigious university-based residency programs. They’re at Johns Hopkins, Stanford, etc. Rochester General hospital is not hiring foreign MDs to take the place of Americans. They’re filling less prestigious, less sought after spots at a mid-tier program, and they still have spots go unfilled.

In short, there is a two-tier system. Americans get all the prestigious, sought-after, competitive spots at top university programs that result in higher pay and opportunity, and less desirable spots go to foreign MDs who will happily primarily serve in underserved areas. I wouldn’t necessarily call them “leftover” spots… but kinda.

And for the record, I’m MAGA AF and don’t like all the immigration stuff. But this thing with foreign doctors replacing U.S. doctors is false. These foreign doctors are filling a need.

I asked my wife about this, and with a bit of an eye roll, she pointed out that over 90% of US Med School grads matched for PGY-1 positions in the initial match, and most of those who did not were set on highly competitive specialties and were willing to take a year of resume building to try to match in their preferred specialty.

Match rates for American graduates are ~93%. So, basically 28,000ish every year.

The remaining 15-20k residency positions are international physicians

It’s worth mentioning that EVERYONE has to complete a residency, when practicing in the United States. IE. A doctor from Pakistan who has been practicing for 10 years still has to complete residency training in the U.S. if they want to practice here.
