Why did Russia steal Crimea after a conflict over the EU, then?

1. Putin wanted to hosts Russia’s Black Sea Fleet at Sevastopol.

2. After Ukraine’s 2014 Euromaidan uprising ousted pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovich, Putin feared Ukraine shifting toward NATO and the EU.

3. Putin framed Crimea as historically Russian, citing its transfer to Ukraine in 1954 under Soviet rule as an arbitrary decision.

4. The annexation boosted Putin’s popularity at home, portraying him as a strong leader restoring Russia’s greatness after the Soviet collapse.

5. Putin claimed the intervention protected Russian-speaking residents from alleged persecution by Ukraine’s new government.

Go re-read why the people created Maidan.

You have some facts and the timeline wrong, here.

Which is what he always claims, post-2008, and people should understand the Putin playbook

Susie Wiles is doing Trump no favor by surrounding him with Zionists and MIC paladins.

Which is?

He chooses an area he wants to annex (often by creating a proxy state). Then he starts to claim Russian-speaking, ethnic Russians are being mistreated. Then he sends in special forces acting as natives to create conflict, and when the area responds to this, he cites as examples of the mistreatment. Then he justifies Russian invasion, occupation, and annexation (again, via proxy-states) in this manner.

This started with Georgia in 2008 and has been done in the exact same way several times (including the Donbas of Ukraine).

Most money on the next area where this plays out is Transnistria

Putin has no incentive to stop grinding Ukraine down as long as NATO continues to encroach east and threaten Russia.

It's currently a transition zone right now with Russian troops stationed there. Thus the name.

Why should the US be committed to going to war over this corrupt kleptocracy?

I find it funny that we have to choose sides in this Ukraine/Russia conflict when Ukraine is not even a NATO member. We should be following the advice of the first president on his Farewell Address, George Washington:

quote:

So likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification.

EU membership and economic integration with the west has always been Russia’s concern with post-USSR Ukraine. Their desire for eastern Ukraine is tied to that with the resources, industry, and port infrastructure on the Black Sea. NATO expansion is just the domestic scapegoat.

If Putin actually cared about nations joining NATO he wouldn’t have practically forced Finland into doing so.

If you want a thermonuclear war that would be a great idea. Especially one over such a corrupt country like Ukraine v
