Controversial Iowa Congressman Steve King, who has faced repeated backlash over his extreme views on race and immigration, cited Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans as an example of bad disaster victims, compared to his Iowa constituents, during a town hall Thursday.

King, a Republican who was stripped of his committee assignments earlier this year after questioning why "white supremacist" and other racist language is deemed offensive, told the crowd in Charter Oak, Iowa, that an unnamed FEMA official told him that Katrina victims only looked for government help, as opposed to Iowans who “take care of each other."

quote:

In a video that King posted on Facebook and that was first reported by HuffPost, King says he made four trips to New Orleans in the wake of the catastrophic and deadly 2005 hurricane.

He sets up the anecdote to explain why he’s proud that Iowa, which is currently experiencing massive flooding, has a better reputation.

“Here’s what FEMA tells me: ‘We go to a place like New Orleans and everybody’s looking around saying, who’s gonna help me, who’s gonna help me?’” he tells the crowd. “They’re just always gratified when they come and see how Iowans take care of each other. It’s a point of pride that spreads across the country.”

Unfortunately, Nagin's performance would justify King's insensitive critique

The New Orleans underclass that was unable to evacuate itself responsibly is largely a dependent underclass. And the media coverage of them gave the impression the whole city is like that. So comments like this don’t surprise or anger me.

A few months after the storm I flew out of New Orleans and was seated next to a gentleman from somewhere like Montana. He had come with a church group to help rebuild in the inner city somewhere. I think he was in NOLA for a week or two. Anyway. His disillusionment was priceless. He talked about how they were working on a black family's house for days, and the young black men who lived there did absolutely nothing. They never lifted a finger while the church group toiled and rebuilt their house. Well, they did keep catcalling and trying to get the church girls to go off with them to do drugs.

I could tell the guy felt like a sucker and I don't think he'll be coming back to do that again. Ha.

He's right, but it's dumb for a public figure to say.

He’s not wrong but all the politicians will condemn him for optics.

New Orleans is a shithole full of people entirely dependent on others to keep them alive.

Although there is some truth to his comments in regards to a certain segment of the NOLA population, he is way off base comparing these events. Katrina hit in 2005. That year we went into the Greek alphabet to name storms. The insurance industry was overwhelmed and didn't have the staffing to handle that number of catastrophes. My family only had 10 inches of water in their house and < $20k in wind damage. I worked in the insurance industry. Because of my position, I was able to obtain documents that allowed me early passage into the area without the restriction of curfew. I hired a contractor, started cleanup, and met with wind and flood adjusters a week after the storm. My family had proper coverage. I was given access to dedicated claims adjusters for family members of the company that I represented. Even with that, I went through a sea of adjusters (30+). With my connections and knowledge of the process, it still took me 6 months to finish the repairs. My family's neighbors took, on average, over a year to complete repairs. King is comparing candy apples to diarrhea.

He's a dumb arse. My neighbors and I in MidCity rebuiit our own damn houses after Katrina. We asked for no help except for legit claims from our insurance companies. We all helped each other rebuild better than it was before.

Iowans might be great folks, but they are not unique regarding helping neighbors.

He is absolutely wrong. There is a big difference in flooding occurring over several days and one that occurred in hours killing a thousand people.

I have also watched video of people in Iowa getting rescued by the government. Delay that effort for 2 or 3 days and let me know how neighborly everyone is.

He could say shite stinks and you would disagree. Because he is not on your team.

The race card has been so overplayed that it has become a far in the wind.

Apologies to rest of board for such a scatological post .

People who didn't go through it will never truly understand just how literally fricked up New Orleans was before the storm, during the storm and after the storm.

It challenged all our assumptions about just how to do every single little thing to deal with a big storm, river water (and, to a lesser degree, lake water) management, drainage, just everything about water in the city.

Having said that, Congressman King isn't totally wrong.

And, of course, they weren't.

Well, they were to people who are constantly looking for a race card to play in everything. But those people could also find rain racist.

He’s 100% wrong, he’s a stupid person, and all of you who agree with him are stupid too.

The basic geography of it all tells you that the flooding in Iowa or even the Mississippi Gulf Coast destruction during Katrina was apples to oranges of what happened in New Orleans where the city was under water for weeks and everyone had to evacuate.

This is stupid.

If he really means it, he should file a bill to exclude his district from disaster funds.
