The difference between 1970’s Iran and the shithole of today almost can’t be exaggerated.
Yeah, the Shah laid a lot of groundwork with his corruption, oppression, fecklessness, and extravagance, but there is also a “baby and bath water” issue.
Huge, massive investments in infrastructure are needed there to get Tehran anywhere close to what it needs to support the growth in that city.
For anybody that does podcasts, the series that “The Rest is History” guys did on Iran was one of their best.

No wonder the Mullahs want them to cover up.
That level of feminine power is too strong to resist.

Oh, he was a laid back totalitarian unless you spoke out againt him in public, in which case you got a visit from Savak and you would disappear for an extended period of time.....and come back with missing limbs.
So the people there traded him for someone worse. A system the KNEW would be more brutal. The Iranian people as a whole WANTED this. When Khomeini came back from exile it wasn't like no one was at the airport to greet him and when he died it wasn't like there was an almost riot because of mass "grief"
Hell, he had a war with Iraq and in the beginning it went badly for Iran and still they rallied around these butchers. The regime at the very least enjoys the plurality of support in Iran.

The Iranian revolution was started and largely brought forth and won by communists and extreme leftists. The Islamist glommed onto it late and as usual the communist acted as useful idiots for Islamist only to be lined up against the wall and executed when it was over.
So this is largely revisionist history or at the very least excluding important context

It's true the current president is a turk from Azerbaijan.

Define “as a whole”.

Can only speak of personal experience, but the Iranian immigrants I've met have been absolutely amazing people.

Yep, I've known several Persians over the years and they all make the distinction that they're Persian not Iranian

The way I heard exiles put it was “The Shah wielded an iron fist in a velvet glove. Khomeini just said to hell with the glove”.

That's simply not true. You really don't know what you are talking about. By the late 1950's the Shah had eliminated the proto communists/ socialists. This was all Khomeini and the mullahs. The Shah had ripped off the mullahs and Khomeini hD a blood beef with the Shah. Shah got sick, he knew it and took advantage of it.
It did not hurt that the Shah had alienated the average Iranian for the prior 3-4 years. The mullahs had very little use for the communists and the communists really were in no position to do shite. Shah had been pretty effective in neutralized them.

That's about right. Shah would be all nice to the US and Europe and say that the info was overblown. Islamists say, yes we did that, rules were violated.

There are millions of young educated Iranians that don't want to be forced to be Muslim. They may identify as Muslim but reject the insane interpretation of Islam that the crazy's practice.

So they aren’t like Muhammad.

Lots of people in Iran are of Turkish and Kurdish ancestry, so there are many that aren’t Persian.

Khameini is ethnic Azerbaijani, which is a Turkish offshoot.

This is my thoughts as well.
I wonder, if given a choice of Religious freedom in Iran with no penalty of being stoned to death, burned to death, thrown off a building, beheaded, etc. per all the current penalties from the Radical Islamists, how many would freely and devoutly remain Muslim?
We need Freedom of Religion for Iran and the Middle East.

This is ignorance on stilts. The Supreme Leader of Iran was an Azeri. Azeri’s are about 1/3 of Iran’s population. Iran (Persia) was converted to Islam in the 7th century AD. The Persian people are mostly Muslim.
Textbook (presumably white) liberal arrogance on display. Tell those stupid brown people that their opinions on their own culture is wrong. If only they had the wisdom bestowed to them by possessing 13 NPR tote bags like you, they could see clearly through their lying eyes.

Ahh, you’ve adopted the left wing victimology semantics.

Great insult. However, I have hated NPR with the heat of a thousand suns since I was a teenager 50 years ago. One of my most passionate political desires came true at last when they defunded those fuggers.
I don’t understand how me having an opinion that Persia is highly Muslim led you to that conclusion.
