I have read the pros and cons for this amendment and I am all for pay raises for teachers, but it's not really that great of a raise and where they're pulling the money from seems like it's not the best way to get the money. Does anybody know any teachers that are really backing this amendment?

As long as teachers cling to their progressive leaning unions, I have never and will never vote for a teacher pay raise.

Is there a more entitled spoiled group of people than teachers? I know some great teachers truly, however, as a whole they are the most needy childish group. They dont realized how the world works. I mean they never have left a school setting. Think about it, go to high school, go to college and then bam right back to high school.

You don't know what you are talking about.
We have many amazing teachers that only want to educate and help improve the futures of their students. It why they entered the profession.

They are trapped in a system that seems designed to not allow them to do that. The most absurd system you can imagine. They are leaving the profession in droves because of it.

They are neither needy or childish "as a whole". Quite the opposite. Although as in any profession, you can find bad ones.

My mom was a public school teacher for 26 years. Taught 3rd and 5th grade. She never once bitched about a pay raise, but what she did bitch about was the unqualified “minority” principals that kept getting installed at the school and worked at that would f*ck sh!t up because they didn’t know what they were doing. But by God they gots them a doctorate degree from some online university.

Oh I absolutely know what Im talking about. They are extremely childish and think the world revolves around the school because they know no different as they have never had to survive outside of a school setting.

Honestly, they teach less now than 20 years ago. They rely on technology for the most part. My high school kids do more tutoring their fellow students than Most teachers do. Now that said, there are some really good teachers, but we are talking ~10% so make something merit based perhaps not this bullshite across the board raise. You know, like actually something that might motivate them to be better.

My wife is in the system and even she's voting against this. I don't remember the exact reason, but it has something to do with Jeff Landry trying to mask other intentions with where he's pulling the money from in order to do it. Something about the place the money is shouldn't be touched or something like that, and if they pull from it for teacher salaries, then they can pull from it for anything. I don't remember exactly, but I know if she's voting against giving herself a pay raise, then it must be pretty fricked so I'm probably going to vote against it too.

Can you explain what you mean by this, and how said technology meets the standards of education in this state, and specifically how this technology replaces the teacher.

I'll wait.

I agree with the other poster who mentioned that teachers nowadays have no idea how the world works. You should hear the stories my wife comes home with about the teachers. Mental problems left and right, can't function in the classroom much less the real world, laziness, desire to do only the bare minimum then bitch and moan when they get called out by district employees for not doing their jobs the right way, etc.. It's mind-boggling hearing the mindset of some of these teachers today. My wife and I just laugh and shake our heads.

What makes it all more infuriating is they can get written up left and right but unless they hit or frick a kid, they can almost never be fired.

They should get a pay raise based on merit, education and experience via contract negotiations not because it was voted on.

I believe teachers should be highly paid, but also highly trained. During the school year, teachers spend more time with our children than parents do.
Their influence upon our children is vastly overlooked.

I have a friend who has been a HS Math teacher in public school for 20 years...he was a manufacturing plant manager before he decided he wanted to do something else.

My 2 youngest son's Chemistry teacher (Private School) was a former research chemist with a PhD from Ohio State who did his post-doc work at MIT. He taught for HS Chemistry for 4 years (and coached baseball) and now is a Medical Nuclear Physics Resident at Louisville.

So, you are correct that the vast majority of teachers in public schools have done very little besides teach and flip burgers...but that isn't all of them.

Teacher friend told me the raise is $250.00 . I don’t know if that is per month or per year.

Also she said the money for the raise is coming from the Teacher’s Retirement System.

If that is true it doesn’t sound like it is a prudent plan.

My concern is the long term budget and pension implications that will be put on school districts. It seems we'll need to raise taxes in the future to cover this. I pay enough in school taxes.

When they free up 2B in locked accounts, the greed and corruption is going to feast.

Having worked around teachers pretty extensively, I would argue that YOU don’t know what you’re talking about. Ask any principal or school president and if they are being honest with you, they’ll admit that dealing with the students is easier than dealing with the teachers. It’s like high school all over again with them with their attitudes and gossip. They are always complaining about something. Generally, they are not very pleasant to be around. Get a job working for a school and I guarantee your opinion will change.

I was educated before technology. All a good teacher needs is a great knowledge of the subject, good speaking skills, a large blackboard and a piece of chalk.

Americans seem to have this weird hatred for educators.

It's like because they get the summers off that they think they should be making poverty wages.

Sure. Don't bother explaining a math concept, give the kids a QR code and have them watch a YouTube video on it. Happens every single day to my son, and has for 2 years.

The district has gotten enough pushback that they sent out a survey last week asking if Chromebooks should be pulled from classrooms. That's an emphatic fricking yes from me, dawg.
