Progressive cities like San Francisco & Seattle have largest racial gaps

in student achievement.

A new study has found that America's most progressive cities — like San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. — have the largest racial gaps in student achievement and graduation rates, while some of America's most conservative cities are leading the way in racial educational equity.
The study, "The Secret Shame: How America's Most Progressive Cities Betray Their Commitment to Educational Opportunity for All," was conducted by Brightbeam, a nonprofit network of education activists. It set out to analyze the conundrum experienced in many of America's cities; which is that despite economic prosperity, the problem gaps in educational outcomes come along racial lines.
What researchers found was that "students in America's most progressive cities face greater racial inequity in achievement and graduation rates than students living in the nation's most conservative cities." The study even says that they "tried to explain [the findings] away, but [they] couldn't."
Here are some findings highlighted in the study that came as a shock to researchers:
Progressive cities, on average, have achievement gaps in math and reading that are 15 and 13 percentage points higher than in conservative cities, respectively.
In San Francisco, for example, 70% of white students are proficient in math, compared to only 12% of black students reaching proficiency — a 58-point gap.
In Washington, D.C., 83% of white students scored proficient in reading compared to 23 percent of black students — a 60-point gap.
In contrast, three of the 12 most conservative cities — Virginia Beach, Anaheim and Fort Worth — have effectively closed or even erased the gap in at least one of the academic categories we examined.
In order to come to these data points, researchers relied on criteria developed independently by political scientists to rank America's biggest cities in terms of conservatism. Then they selected the 12 most progressive and the 12 most conservative cities from the list, and analyzed each city's publicly available achievement and graduation data.
Speaking with NBC News, Brightbeam CEO Chris Stewart said the results are hard to believe.
"In the cities that have the most resources, and frankly the most places where the kids really need help, we have done outstandingly bad. Not just bad results, but results that defy the imagination of what you'd expect for a place like San Francisco, where they have so many resources it boggles the mind," Stewart said.
"Places like San Francisco, Seattle, Minneapolis — which boast a very strong economy and very strong levels of education for white kids — are doing so poorly for kids at the bottom of the well," he added.
"D.C. shocked me," he said, noting that the U.S. capital has a 62-point gap between black and white students in math proficiency rates, the highest disparity among the cities analyzed.
"It was the most shocking of all. I always considered D.C. a good black city with strong black political power. But it's changed. The gaps between education, wealth, home ownership ... are outstanding."
San Francisco (58 points difference), Minneapolis (53) and Oakland, California (51) round out the top four progressive cities with the largest gaps, NBC News noted, and the achievement disparity between Latino and white students was not much better.

Conclusion?
Sounds like it is time to move from socialism to communism.
Alternative conclusion?
Math and reading are racist!
Racist conclusion?
Black parents, although using a plural is largely inaccurate, mostly, not all but most, see education as a free government baby sitter and don't give a crap about achievement! (My wife taught public junior and high school for 27 years)

This is the most troubling thing of all

When you ask nothing of people who are by definition immature (children) and provide them a tailor made excuse for accomplishing nothing you get nothing.

Liberals are racists? Color me shocked.

What is this "we" you are talking about? Don't blame me for that crap.
Also, wait...more money thrown at the problem doesn't solve it? Who would-a-thunk it?

If they are pandered to and the curricula are dumbed down because of low expectations, I dont see how that gap gets closed. In cities where minorities are expected to do as well as majority students, they do.
The soft bigotry of low expectations.
I expect to see this turned around and someone will explain to us that the stress created by pushing these students to perform at a high level is creating emotional and psychological problems for the kids and is therefore not justified.

This is an entirely foreign concept to the average liberal. It's really strange because if you meet a liberal in person they know the above without any doubt if you were talking about their children or their neighbors children
But get on to a subject outside of their circle and suddenly basic common knowledge leaves their brain and is replaced with the exact opposite.
Hell I know myself that if I could make what I make right now while putting in half the effort I would totally do it. Heck if I could make 80% of what I make now while putting in half the effort I would do it
Why do liberals think minorities won't behave in the way any other human would behave?

This.
I would imagine that in each of those progressive cities, those students and their parent(s) are told daily that they are victims, whitey is evil and they will never get ahead because of racism. Self-fulfilling prophecy.
I would also imagine in the conservative cities these messages are greatly muted (if they are expressed at all).

You should see the class pictures from my niece's Bay area preschool class. It's whiter than any preschool you'd see anywhere in LA
Muh diversity!
Muh diversity!

my impression of the DC public school system from my time in the area is that it's a jobs program for a lot of middle class blacks...look at the administrator/teacher ratio and the amount of money spent per pupil...
Posted on 2/19/20 at 7:21 am to Crimson Wraith
Did the study show the difference between whites having two parents and the black children having one?

Progressives are all about diversity as long as that diversity stays out of their gated neighborhoods and schools.

Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding!!!!!!
Look at Louisiana public school administrations. Look at all Louisiana public entities like the SWB and DOTD. It’s nothing but jobs programs for low achievers.

Who knew that liberal, prog filth oppressed non-whites better than anyone in US history? Did it then, continue to do it now.
Nothing has changed.

It's unfortunate, but even I have to agree with you. This is the biggest reason I never entered education. Black families (as a group) don't care about education.
The big issue is that your dealing with younger mothers (I'm sure you know exactly what I'm saying) who don't have their own lives figured out.

Stopped reading right there. They don't face any inequality there. They simply aren't achieving at as high a level as other students. If I had to guess, it's because in leftist utopia, minorities must be admitted in certain numbers, even if it shuts out qualified students, and even if those admitted are slobbering retards.

Let's look at this practically. Those job programs at least give people some form of employment. I'd rather have working people anyday than non-working.
You have to take victories where you can get them. Louisiana is already losing population BECAUSE of lack of jobs as it is. Cutting job programs will increase that number. And the lazy ones would simply get on welfare.
