I was trying to think of a profession I respect less than the present-day version of “journalism.” I can’t think of one.

Drug dealers? Nope. I have a pretty libertarian attitude about the things people do with their own time and money, so drug dealers don’t really bother me.

Porn stars? Nope. See above.

Telemarketers? Annoying as hell, but I assume most are just normal people trying to put food on the table.

IRS employees. See above

Lawyers? I know the profession as a whole gets a bad rap, but I've had some wonderful friends over the years who are lawyers and are oustanding, smart people.

But journalists? Reporters? With a few exceptions, they are scum. They do more harm than any other group I can think of.

End of rant/

If you segment the lawyers, I’d have no problem saying the class-action bottom feeders. They frick stuff up for everybody.

The NY Times is a good example of how that trade has declined. The paper of record has become a badly written tabloid.

Politician, and it should not be a profession.

Negatory. Most of the early jazz musicians in New Orleans got their starts playing in brothels.

Generally speaking I agree with this (there are a few “journalists” that I do respect)

I teach corporate communication. Every fall I teach a news writing course, which the PR types that I advise and the journalism majors have to take.

The journalism majors are the kids who think their opinion matters more than anyone else’s. They are the ones that cause the most drama (organized protest of a student event luau where there was a pig roast). They are the ones that argue their C papers should be As because they have never written anything average.

In the fall, I am scheduled to teach political communication. In 2016, I bought the class pizza and we watched election returns. That was fun.

Seriously? I mean, I could actually carve out some serious regard for a dude like that.

Does it count if I actually lived in a recently closed brothel in undergrad? I couldn't play the piano, though.

good grief. kids today don't know the classics:

quote:

"My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician," Harry S. Truman is quoted as having said. "And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference."
