As I understand it, if you take the cash, your Child Tax credit will be reduced by that amount on next year’s taxes.
So this year, it can be cut in half and completely cut in following years.

This is a 1 year deal that will expire next year in the middle of campaigning for the mid term elections. It's timed to put the pressure on Republicans to extend it. Damned if they do damned if they don't. Out maneuvered again.
