POTUS Trump says he may demand that the Panama Canal be returned to the United States.

Either Panama cooperates or the USA, Like A BOSS, will just take it back. Jimmy Carter, who gave it up, is going to be pissed. This could force Jimmy back into politics!!

I always thought it was a stupid move, but isn’t it dated, because most of today’s large ships cannot use it.

I would rather spend the billions we are pissing away in Ukraine for a wider and deeper Panama Canal that is American controlled.
But mush brains and family, are on the Ukrainian take.

there was a massive expansion to it in fairly recent years to be able to allow much bigger container ships to pass thru.
I was at the Canal 2 months ago, very amazing place to visit and see in person.
Family has been in the shipping business for generations and always wanted to the see the canal.
And what Jimmy Carter, the peanut farmer did with that deal and now with China basically taking it over, this gives me hope that Trump really is going to call in our markers & re-establish the USA’s dominance in world trade.
NO REASON FOR Cargo Vessels importing and exporting for USA Commerce should be paying any tonnage fees that are charged for other 3rd parties.
i can see basic maintenance etc…. but FOR PROFIT and that profit basically helping the Chinese, screw that!!!

Ever since US interest in a Panama Canal first peaked during the Roosevelt Administration, there was at least as good an alternative --- a Nicaragua Canal. In fact, had it not been for French lobbying in 1902, Nicaragua would have almost certainly been the chosen site for the transoceanic canal.
Estimates of current cost and timeframe for construction are $50Bn and 5yrs to completion. It would be a huge boon to one of the poorest countries in the Americas. Geopolitically, Nicaragua would be politically allied with anyone willing to take on the project.
So who's been trying to cut that deal?
CHINA!
.... unsuccessfully so far.
It's a project which would seem tailor made for Trump ... and Musk. I wonder if that is the angle he's actually pursuing.
