I suspect he wasn't quite the overt communist back then.

Sounds like jealousy and envy to me.....of course when he's so wrong about biblical salvation it's no wonder that he's dead wrong on this issue as well.

He just recently promoted one of the worst offenders of protecting predator priests to the position formerly known as Prefect for the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, as well as making him a cardinal. This apostate doesn't have enough moral authority to lead a lemonade stand.

People are now realizing the institution which wrote the Bible and created the entire Christ narrative is corrupt? Duhh, they took a story about a man who said give everything to the poor and built the wealthiest nonprofit in the world where the leader lives in a giant gold palace filled with priceless riches.

Remember: They said the Nazis were good people (probably because they hated Jews too), then denied the holocaust and helped Nazis escape with fake passports after the war was over. It is not a surprise they would side with China.

Historically - they have covered up pedophiles and embezzlement. Endorsed unjust wars, torture, slavery, genocide, book burning, and oppressive dictatorships. They have always rebuked science - from imprisoning Copernicus and Galileo to condemning HIV research and prevention.

Everything they have done has been corrupt - That said (for some reason) people believe the Bible is word for word the voice God. That God entrusted the most corrupt institution on the planet to scribe and preserve the New Testament. And then pillage and rape and tax and reform while filling the Vatican Vaults to the brim. For Millenniums.

But then someone like myself will get downvoted for looking at all this and thinking, i bet they made the whole thing up for wealth and power.

Edit: Let me clarify, im not saying a higher power does not exist. I am simply challenging the notion that the catholic church is the vessel by which God speaks to man - which is ultimately the core tenet of the church. The pope is selected by god and speaks for god.

Eh, JPII wrote some pretty scathing stuff on markets and even Benedict was a social Democrat. The Catholic leadership is European and like all of Western Europe have been economically to the left of us for sixty years. It’s not surprising that colors the thinking of popes. It’s not like they’re reading the Chicago school

First of all, he’s a commie and an anti-pope.

Secondly, he’s insulting God by saying we can damage the earth that God created. If God created the perfect world and it was good (Genesis 1) and he’s all-powerful, to say we as mere humans are capable of damaging God’s perfect creation is kind of stupid.

But, it’s all irrelevant anyway. The world is about to end. In fact, according to the gospels and to Paul’s epistles, the world is going to end before some of them die. We’re already 2000 years past the world’s expiration date.

So we can’t damage the earth, but even if we could, what does it matter?

I will explain - Its political

A century ago - the Nazis wanted to pillage the Vatican vaults during WW2, so the Church struck a deal which allowed them to remain in Rome in trade for endorsements of Hitler and Mussolini.

Currently, the Chinese government wants to close and pillage the churches in Hong Kong and the Pope has a deal to say whatever China wants to maintain the 500,000 practicing Catholics in the Hong Kong region.

As a devout Catholic, I really wish he'd handle the business of the church, lead the faith and stay out of the politics.

I want to hear his opinion on global warming about as much as I want to hear a celebrity's opinion on politics.

Well, first off, there’s none holy but God, as is there’s none righteous but God, and yes, don’t interfere with other people’s governments.

Pope Pius XI was actually pretty anti-Hitler and the Nazis. He died in 1939 and Pope Pius XII succeeded him and publicly kept silent over what was going on. He had a back channel to Hitler, and folks loyal to the Vatican have claimed for decades that he was using it to try and talk Hitler down, but the documents recently came out and the only thing he was trying to talk Hitler down about was persecuting the church. So we had one pope who saw the Nazis for what they were and one pope who impotently turned a blind eye.

True. But any old institution is going to have some of that. The church just has a whole lot of it.

Not really. The Vatican is fairly open to science as far as denominations go. It was a Catholic Priest, Georges LeMaitre, who came up with the theory of the Big Bang after looking at Einstein’s theory of special relativity. Prior to the second Council of Trent, plenty of Catholics weren’t literalist. Augustine wasn’t. Aquinas wasn’t. The Christian humanists weren’t. It was only in the centuries immediately following the reformation that the Church started treating knowledge as a threat to its temporal power, but by the 20th century that had mostly stopped. The Vatican even has its own observatory operated by scientifically trained priests, publishing in peer reviews journals. Their poor stance on HIV prevention had more to do with the teaching that contraception is morally wrong than antipathy to science. Don’t get me wrong, it had ghastly consequences.

They don’t say the Bible is the literal word for word voice of God. They treat it as revelation, and as important, but couple with with tradition and the teachings of the magisterium in ways that keep church teachings alive in a way literalist denominations are not. It’s one of the things evangelicals hate about the church.

I don’t think you will seeing as how most people on the board are evangelicals who hate the church, and Catholics like me who don’t like this particular pope.

That’s also not a thing the Church teaches. The Pope is supposedly kept free from error by the Holy Spirit when speaking ex cathedra on matters of the faith, which has only happened twice in history, both in the 1800s, and both having to do with Mary.

If the church thought the Pope had a direct line to God, as the Mormons do with their Elders, the church would change a lot more frequently, as the Mormons do. Instead it’s more like the Supreme Court where they have to justify all their decisions based on previous council teachings, church law, the encyclicals or previous popes, etc. if this were not the case, we’d probably have women priests, gay marriage, and access to contraception under Francis.

There is a big synod happening right now in the church after a year of getting lay people’s inputs on the church. The laypeople tend to be to the left of the clergy so the big fear for conservative Catholics is that Francis is going to use the synod for grounding to change long-standing Church teachings on things like letting women be deacons. But the whole reason he is doing the synod is that he can’t just say “God told me women can be deacons now”
