Scientists say the sale of the animals in wildlife markets should be strictly prohibited to minimise the risk of future outbreaks.

Pangolins are the most-commonly illegally trafficked mammal, used both as food and in traditional medicine.

In research published in the journal Nature, researchers say handling these animals requires "caution".

And they say further surveillance of wild pangolins is needed to understand their role in the risk of future transmission to humans.

quote:

Lead researcher Dr Tommy Lam of The University of Hong Kong said two groups of coronaviruses related to the virus behind the human pandemic have been identified in Malayan pangolins smuggled into China.

"Although their role as the intermediate host of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak remains to be confirmed, sale of these wild animals in wet markets should be strictly prohibited to avoid future zoonotic [animal to human] transmission," he told BBC News.

The Chinese have a culture of eating and medicating with some nasty shite as a result of living under communism for so long.

Looks like a cross between a possum and an anteater. Why in the hell would somebody eat that?

I knew a couple of people from Hong Kong who.said that people from Mainland China were nasty. I just figured it was an LSU vs. Bama type thing, but I'm beginning to think they knew what they were talking about.

Scientists are saying they can trace genetic markers of the coronavirus that indicates it first came from bats and was transferred to pangolins that then crossed-over to humans.

Bats and pangolins were being eaten by humans in the Wuhan markets. Disgusting.

Rednecks in the US eat all kinds of possum, squirrel, nutria, etc. What makes this animal more of a disease risk? Is it different cooking (maybe not cooking) methods?

That is the root of all the problems coming from that part of the world. Want to know what it’s like to be Ron Jeremy? Move to the Far East. Almost every American is a pipe toting porn star compared to those nasty little bastards. Same thing with those little sawed off Mexicans.

That was really good. It's no wonder these diseases keep popping up in China. That menu contained just about everything. Blows my mind it's a real thing.

And China doesn't give two shits that their nastiness is wreaking havoc on the world. Bet they will go back to letting these markets flourish when this is over.

I 100% believe it. Who the frick would want to eat a bat? Bats are cool animals. I mean some even look like dogs with wings:

But frick, even the Chinese eat dogs
