One problem NEVER discussed by politicians: Taking care of elderly family

Families are literally wiped out by nursing home expenses. Medicaid grabs all the family assets. It's a major problem yet never discussed.

We also treat the elderly like shite in this country.

Another example of people wanting the government to resolve everything for them. Put the home in an irrevocable trust years ahead of time. Problem solved
I don’t need to elect a Democrat to do that for me

How is this a political problem?
Your post highlights the voter issue right now, though. Conflict and hypocrisy. People want something that their preferred party policies can't or won't give them, so they're always unhappy and looking for something new.
For example, Dems want safe cities, but also want no restrictions on drugs or homeless. Republicans want specific regulation and subsidies, but the government to also balance the budget and cut spending.
There's a fundamental problem here.

Silence boomer. You are collecting Medicare payments and senior citizen discounts and social security checks.
$20 spent on the elderly to every $1 spent on the young

I’m <35 years old. I’d love these payments and checks and discounts you’re describing. Must be nice!

So do you hate old people for having assets that can be used to pay for their end of life care or do you hate old people for being a burden on society? Either way theres absolutely no reason the govt should pay for it if they have the assets to pay for it themselves. Sorry your inheritance is gonna keep granny comfy for a few more years instead. Won't be long until the left here starts clamoring for assisted suicide by the govt so pathetic miscreants who whine about stuff like this can murder their old relatives and steal their possessions before the govt takes them.

How much have you contributed to social security and Medicare by chance?

Why would you say they NEVER discuss this? Democrats talk about this all the time and Kamala Harris made having Medicare pay for these expenses a centerpiece of her campaign.

quote:Plan ahead. Medicaid has a lookback period. May be 7 years now. Transfer all assets to someone in your family you trust. You must do it before 7 years though. At the time nursing home is needed, the elderly have no assets (they are allowed to keep a little for incidentals) but are immediately eligible for Medicaid after the Medicare 90 day window runs out. Worked for us but we planned.

There use to be a time when families took care of families. How sad that a Mom or Dad breaks their backs to work and support children to make sure they are always cared and covered until adulthood, and sometimes pass that, and when Mom and Dad become a burden to their busy lifestyle, they must be placed somewhere.

The newest Medicaid grift is convincing Medicaid that an older family member can no longer take care of themself and getting paid to sit around all day and watch TikTok. You see signs stapled to telephone poles all over Atlanta and Macon for this.
It's rampant, and it'd be interesting to know what percentage of "jobs added to the economy" this accounts for.

You sound like an idiot. Even when people keep their elderly parents at home, they often have serious health issues that require home health, sitters and other expensive care issues.
And even with the best intentions, many people simply cannot physically care for an elderly parent with major health problems.

Add this to the list of things congress doesn’t address…like a tax break for people that actually pay for kids tuition, healthcare premiums/desuctibles, etc.

Ok, so it becomes medical necessary. Again, we must Government offer a solution for that?
Remember, one of the things people dinged Trump on was spending. So we don't have the money to fund that.

Kamala Harris had a plan to address home care costs when she ran, but hardly anyone paid attention.

\I don't know all the ins and outs but my personal experience:
My 82 year old Mother fell and had a head injury 6 years ago.
United Healthcare fought like hell to deny a month long rehab stay that doctors said had a high chance of her recovering to keep living alone.
We got 2 1/2 weeks after lawyering up I then took a month off work to actually continue the rehab myself at a big financial cost not many could probably do, especially if they had kids.
My mom recovered and has been living at home instead of a nursing home for 6 years since then.
Most Americans would likely not have been able to fight the insurance company and take so much time off work and she'd have been in a nursing home the past 6 years instead.
Health care in this country is a disaster.
