Guess this isn't the year Mrs. Diego Ricardo gets her Hermes bag.

1. I still don't understand why people think mentioning a Veblen good makes a point about tariffs.

2. I see we're at the "this is happening and it's a good thing" phase.

Imitation is the best form of flattery.

SS will be back once this tariff situation settles out and a new baseline is created between trading partners. In the midst of disruption, well, people get disrupted.

Imagine paying 22k for some bag that is being sold on street in China right now for 40 bucks

Which is why it's irrelevant in a conversation about tariffs. The bag isn't the product, the name is, and Veblen goods don't follow traditional market models.

I went down an internet rabbit hole once and learned that these high dollar purses are used as a form of currency. Dudes “pay” sugar babies (hookers) in bags and the women turn around and sell them.

If you're dropping $20k on a bag, you're not going to bat an eyelash at $22k.

I think those were the Golden Goose shoes. My SO’s coworker would buy them. Basically white sneakers with a silver star, pre-dirtied. Lol.

My upstairs maid uses this bag to carry her pledge and mister clean around. We bought her, her own village and private jet for her kids that are the nannies for my tennis and bocce club lady friends.

If I bought the wife a bag like that, she wouldn't have any money to put in it.

I once bought my mom a Dooney and Burke back when they were big. She opened it up looking for money. When I told her how much it cost, she explained that a purse is no damn good without any money to put in it.
