Admitting people who can't pass the bar would dishonor the profession and increase malpractice.

This is why strong safety's "I thought the free market was supposed to take care of this" nonsense is so stupid.

This is a way for the government to find out if you are qualified to operate in their realm. It has nothing to do with the free market.

Damn, wouldn't have guessed you to be one to be against "Big Education".

Nice.

I thought the LA Bar was stupid easy. I found the MS Bar harder.

LA was easy but I took it when you could study past exams and do ok. TX was tough, mostly multi state.

It's actually not uncommon to fail the first time. I believe the pass rate is around 66% across most states. I know a couple of competent attorneys that failed the first time around that I would trust.

It's not really a mark of shame until there's multiple failures. And as for being a barrier to entry, of course it is, the bar exam exists to try to ensure that every licensed attorney has reached a minimum standard of competency before being allowed to practice.

You wouldn't want a surgeon that hasn't passed his boards or a CPA that can't pass their exam. Same goes for lawyers.

Also, there are WAY too many law schools. We would be fine if fifty of them closed overnight.

What was tough about MS was the essay portion. I thought the MBE was easy. Thank goodness too.

Is there any evidence that Harris was unqualified or an affirmative action student...?

No. This is a worthy thread to discuss, but those kinds of comments tarnish potential legitimate debate.

More govt when it serves your aims huh?

Shouldn't the market just figure it out?

So is the government going to start hiring "attorneys" that didn't go to law school and didn't pass the bar?

I never said lower the bar, I asked if it should be the end all be all to determine fitness.

That's what I question. That's it. Never said it wasn't important or that it shouldn't be considered

You cannot get that information. It's like IQ scores. Teachers used to have access to their student's IQs through cum folders. That became forbidden back in the 90s.

I'd like to see you go under the knife of an unlicensed surgeon.

Maybe he/she could try a brain transplant on you?

I would venture to say anyone in the top 20 or so percentile intelligence-wise, with a college degree, would have a decent shot to pass a bar exam with two months of intensive study.

No chance.

These are not exactly airtight conversions but the 80th percentile for IQ is about 115 (top 20%). The LSAT/IQ conversion puts an IQ of 115 at an LSAT score of 142. That's extremely low. Most people who get a 142 on the LSAT either don't make it in a law school or enroll at some very low end school like Southern whose bar passage rates after three years of intense study is below 50%.
