Senior American officials in recent days have told their counterparts in Israel and other countries that the United States will be forced to launch a ground operation to capture Iran’s Kharg Island, the primary oil export terminal for the Islamic Republic, in the Northern Persian Gulf, according to two sources familiar with the details who spoke to Israel’s i24News.

The Kharg thing almost feels like a distraction to me. My gut tells me we're planning an operation elsewhere and we want their attention on Kharg. I could be 100% wrong though

Kinda reminds me of the focus on gulf war 1 on an amphibious invasion of Kuwait. Sadam moved a lot of forces to stop an attack that never happened…..
Focus your enemy away from where you plan to attack…..

Same here. At first I thought we were trying to get them to not bomb it by us threatening to bomb it. Then we threatened to take it with troops. Either side could blow it up easily. I guess troops would narrow the IRGC's options on blowing it up. But at a huge risk.
IDK, what is the purpose of taking control of it according to the US? Protection??? Just seems like that would definitely make it a target when currently it doesn't seem to be a target.

One purpose could be to force Iran to concentrate their remaining forces to oppose it, thereby making them easier targets

Since it's an island, easiest way to take control would be to tell the folks on the island that they must get off in two days because all supply vessels will be blown apart then. Next day destroy power and water supplies to the island to encourage leaving. Next day destroy all boats to the island carrying men and supplies, next day destroy all boats. No need to invade to shut down. no need for boots on the ground, no need to destroy shipping terminal.

Or instead of Kharg they could use marines to take the islands in the narrowest part of the straight. There is an airfield on the largest island which would be useful to us but the Iranians would probably destroy it before they lost it.
Taking those islands would make it easier to control the straight (at least to my civilian eyes).
