France’s record of defending itself post Napoleonic Wars is rather poor.
Franco-Prussian War: confidently declared war on a Prussia they thought they could easily bully. Ended up losing both Paris and their Emperor, both being captured by the Germans. Forced to surrender.
World War II: Saved in 1914 by the BEF and a German major staff officer allowing a gap between 1st and 2nd Army to open as they approached the Marne River. France spent the next two years launching disastrous offensives that gained nothing a lead to millions of French soldiers being slaughtered. By 1917, the French army was in open mutiny and on the verge of collapse. The only reason France wasn’t knocked out of the war in 1917 was because the Germans were on the defensive and British forces kept pressure on the Germans in their sector and the Russians launched an offensive in the East of the front to distract them.
World War II: a combination of strategic shortsightedness, cowardly leadership, and logistical ineptitude lead France to ignominious surrender in only six weeks agaisnt a German army the French actually outnumbered in both men and armored vehicles.
And that’s not even counting their embarrassing battlefield defeat in Indochina by the communist Viet Minh in 1954.
