Observations at the ‘blessing box’ near my house

A nearby church has a ‘blessing box’ on its property. The idea being that the box has canned goods and other essentials that someone who is in dire straits can take as a last resort (there is a sign inside that says ‘take only what you need’).
Normally I will see smiling white women bringing removing the items from their cars for the box(notice that the box isn’t anywhere near their houses). They arrange the items neatly on the shelves and leave the door closed and latched against the elements. They leave with smiles on their faces.
Later I will see a single person from a different demographic drive up to the box (notice they are well off enough to own a car), dump everything in a bag, and drive off leaving the box empty and the door open and flapping in the breeze.
I keep thinking this situation can be likened to our larger society.

Oh, and there is more and more garbage appearing behind a nearby building.

Different people are... different.

But the white women didn't have to look the Mr./Ms. 'Different Demographic' in the eye, only to feel guilty after being called racist.

Free services being abused, a story as old as time.

Most people cannot self manage, and cannot coexist in a voluntary/cooperative world.
I lean libertarian in most ways but mass incarceration is the only way to maintain civility.

This is why I quit donating toys at Christmas time. People abuse it real bad.

That’s what lack of oversight will do.
Our church also offers things to those in need, like gas cards, grocery gift cards, and even putting people in a hotel for a few nights, but our limited mercy funds are overseen by our Deacons, who have limits on how much any person can receive at once, and they keep a record of who is asking, to ensure needs are met while still striving to be good stewards.
They also don’t just get help alone. They are talked to about their need for Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins, are encouraged to attend worship with us, and are told that becoming a member of our church will allow for more help availability, as we prioritize help for our members first before non-members.
So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. -Galatians 6:10

We have one at the church up the street and I’m convinced the houses across the street watch the box and clean it out every time something is dropped off.
I once put in food and went back by 5 minutes later and it was empty.

When I was a kid in the 50s there were poor people in my neighborhood who would not accept charity. The reason? Pride. I guess that doesn't exist anymore.

This is how I was raised in the 80s. My family would be embarrassed to accept charity, especially long-term.

Pride and shame don't exist anymore. But don't disrespect anyone!

I agree with your idea but I believe that pride exists, except that some people have too much of it. Disrespect claims are a function of too much pride. But shame died away long ago.

Always comical to watch the holiday food giveaways. They will wait in line for hours to get free shite. How many would wait in line for a job application??
80% cf those same people are obese.

I heard a piece of advice when you are moving to an area, if you like the neighborhood, go to the nearest grocery store. Check the parking lot, if there are a lot of shopping carts left in the parking lot......you are probably moving into a neighborhood with a bunch of selfish lazy neighbors
The first time I went to Auburn in high school, it was gameday, a traffic nightmare, yet I never had to wait more than 3 cars before someone would let you turn or merge.....they had this ole boy at War Eagle. I also visited alabama, they were as expected obnoxious arses.....and it took me months of washing to get rid of the stench
