U.S. officials reportedly plan to urge Ukraine to grant autonomy to eastern regions that are still controlled by separatists who participated in the 2014 Russia-backed revolt against the Ukrainian government.

Jesus Christ how weak is that. “Just give them the Sudetenland, all they want is to reunite with ethnic Germans.”

I don’t support defending Ukraine militarily, but to butt in and outright undermine Ukraine’s position by “urging” this? frick us.

No surprise. This is the school of “diplomacy” that says the fastest most decisive. way to end a war is to surrender. Obama 2.0.

Here’s the AP article your link is piggybacking on. It’s not quite what the DC article is suggesting.

quote:

Administration officials have suggested that the U.S. will press Ukraine to formally cede a measure of autonomy to eastern Ukrainian lands now controlled by Russia-backed separatists who rose up against Kyiv in 2014. An undefined “special status” for those areas was laid out in an ambiguous, European-brokered peace deal in 2015, but it has never taken hold.

quote:

Under the 2015 deal, Ukraine agreed to change its constitution to accommodate the “peculiarities” of the two Donbas separatist republics and to legalize their “special status.” Some analysts said the deal’s vagueness, and some conflicting requirements, make its provisions effectively unworkable.

Ukraine is willing to engage in talks on defining “special status,” including possible changes that account for the cultural and linguistic differences of its eastern Donbas region, which has a higher proportion of native Russian speakers, the person familiar with the private talks between Ukraine and the United States said.

But Ukraine would reject any change that gives the region virtual veto power over national policy, the person said.

What would you advise Biden and our allies to do?

I say let the people of Ukraine decide.

If they want a war they fight it.

If they want to go to Russia with no fight go on.

We should stay out of it.
Unless Hunter Biden wants to give back the money he made off serving on the energy company’s board in the Ukraine.

Good thing he failed, otherwise we wouldn't be enjoying this prosperous and revitalized government/culture/society!

Not this:

“Administration officials have suggested that the U.S. will press Ukraine to formally cede a measure of autonomy to eastern Ukrainian lands now controlled by Russia-backed separatists who rose up against Kyiv in 2014.”

No you don't. You remember Democrats trying to impeach him for exposing what Joe Biden, his brother, and Hunter were doing illegally in Ukraine.

They were funneling government funds back into their own accounts via phony jobs. Trump knew exactly what Joe and Hunter did and was exposing it.

I really don't give a shite if Russia gets more of Ukraine or not. I also like the idea of not getting into an unnecessary hot war with Russia when our interest are clearly not known.

But this diplomatic acquiescence to Russia is problematic from a global perspective. That is, other counties now see an opening because of Biden's weakness. They are going to want their pound of flesh too.

Putin would have NEVER taken this stance with Ukraine with Trump in the White House.
