I get scam calls, text and emails all the time. But earlier this week one scammer almost got me.
The phone number came up on caller ID as "google". So I answered it and a very articulate and officially sounding American guy was on the other end. He said he was calling from google security and that they received a flag that there have been several attempts of devices trying to log into my account and recommended that I update my password.
I replied good advice. I will update my password.
Then he continued that in order to make sure that no one as accessed my google account that google needs to put a 48 hour block on my account.
Once I heard that, it raised a red flag.
I asked him WTF does that mean.
He went on to explain but he was talking fast and I didn't really listen.
But while he was talking fast he was trying to log into my account and google sent a two factor authentication to my YT account to verify if it was me or someone I know trying to log into my account.
The guy said please accept the notification from YT.
I did not accept.
He replied, why did you decline the YT authorization? I'll send it again.
I declined again.
He said, you declined it again and sent the authorization a third time.
I told him I'm not authorizing you. You sound scammy.
Then out of the blue he goes, "good job, this is a scam. How did I do? Did I do a good job?"
I just told him to frick off and hung up.

Something is going on, I just recently started getting 10 or so Scam calls and 10 or so spam calls daily.
It's freaking annoying as hell
I found dialing #662# for TMobile stopped the scam calls, the spam still come through but my phone doesn't ring. It just shows them on the screen.
TMobile also has a free app Scam Shield
I had added my number to the do not call list with no luck

Android will allow you to do a Do-Not-Disturb mode that allows through Contacts only. It doesn't exactly block the calls, but it at least doesn't set off the ringer all day.
I'm sure Apple has something similar.

Answer the call and blast music or siren sounds as loud as possible into the phone.

I don’t have a voicemail. Maybe this is the reason I don’t get that many spam calls like others do.
I don’t see the reason for voicemail anymore. Just send me a text if you can’t reach me by phone.
Yep. I've never set up the voicemail on the phone I have now. It was a new number when I got the phone, and since I don't have voicemail set up it will just ring forever if I don't answer a call. I think that has helped in not having this number added to lists as active.

If you answer, it acknowledges the # is a working #.

I wonder how many car wrecks and deaths have been caused by a grandma seeing an area code she knows, and answers it in a panic while she's driving?

Mom died a few years ago - in her 80's - in nursing home hospice, and during that time we intercepted so many calls to her phone, just infested with scammers

Sure if you don't like to have fun with the scammers and telemarketers that wouldn't be a good idea. Sometimes I like to answer and have fun with it.
I remember back in the late 90s/early 2000s when telemarketers were a big problem, me and my brothers would fight over who gets to answer when "unknown caller" showed up on the caller id. It was a free chance to just be a complete a-hole to someone, and they deserve it for trying to scam you first and calling to waste your time. Its not as fun now though since they're all foreigners.

But today’s “callers” are those robo-caller setups.

The Do Not Call List doesn't seem to really work nowadays. I've been on it for years and was still getting 1-20 spam calls a day recently. I have a couple of apps (Active Armor, Call Protect) that help some.
Recently I was getting most of my spam calls from 3 different area codes. There is an app called Number Shield where you can enter the area code and the first 3 digits followed by #### and it will block all numbers coming in with that area code & prefix.
The best deterrent to go into your phone settings and turn the Silence Unknown Callers to On which means no calls will come through if they're not in your contacts.

Just delete it
By responding you're letting the spammers know it's a live number and you'll get more junk

When they call, say “Pakistan is the greatest! We love Pakistan!”

Easily 90% of all Spam calls today are scams coming out of India and honestly at this point I'm just starting to hate Indian people in general because of it. Yeah that's irrational but Jesus Christ it's ridiculous and their country does nothing about it
I can no longer interact in public with a dot/Hindu without thinking they're trying to scam me.
Sad reality.

Mine started 2 years ago. I get about 15 calls a day. I've never bought anything over the phone and never will. They don't care.
