i disagree unless you have a worthless degree.

people say things like "it doesn't really matter where you go to school" or "it's not about where you start" but that's simply not true. where you start your career is very important and a poor choice can absolutely set you back.

waiting a few months to get a real engineering/accounting/finance/etc. job is worth it.

Yes, I agree! I think we need to get off of our high horses and recognize that some of these kids are talented and respectful and great to be around. And have a thing or two to teach us ol' fogies.

It's really much more productive to have a meaningful conversation with them than dismiss them out of hand. Ask me how I know!

It would be idiotic to pursue a 4 year liberal arts degree right now rather than trade school. Our county did not even have a licensed plumber up until 2 years ago and the dude is making a small fortune. I all but begged my son to do it!

I am routinely hearing that candidates have to go through a 3-interview process (or more) for just a single job. And even after all that, employers are rude and don't give a final answer. Courtesy works both ways.

That's an indulgence employers can engage in when the demand in the labor market is down. They can afford to be discerning in their decision making process because they won't be sniped by a prospective employer quicker to offer your candidate. HR people were not calling applicants to inform them of a negative decision during the boom times but nobody involved was worried about it. The employers were trying to offer as quickly as possible and the applicants were likely in the middle of 2-3 other serious application processes too.

No matter what kind of corporate propaganda they serve, your employer is not a family. It is a transactional relationship: you give them your time, they derive value from your outputs during that time, and they give you some percentage of what value you derive for them in compensation. They'll cut you down like grass in suburban lawn as soon as the financial calculus doesn't work out for them. When you're not even an employee, they don't bother maintaining appearances anymore. Everything is transactional now.

this is very much also happening to engineering and comp sci majors, even ones with good internship experience and good skills.
.

It doesn’t matter what you graduate in if it’s not in demand and marketable. Kids today should definitely research the market when deciding the sheepskin they want.

I have a just out of college entry level job posting out right now. Have had 4 applicants, all recent graduates. Tried to set up one interview so far. Was told they could only meet after 5 or on weekend. Suggested today around 4. Confirmed then received an email today saying they had a head cold, could we reschedule. Suggested Monday at 5:30 and they have a non-committal response so I suggested they set a time. They suggested Tuesday. We will see if they show up.

Another position I have open I set up 6 interviews last week and not one showed up. This was a $13/hr job so very little skill set required, but not one arrived. This was after confirming time and receiving response from all. I mean, if you aren’t going to show, just don’t set the interview.

It’s definitely the generation.

If they are young I’d recommend starting at the dead arse bottom and working their way up.

Yep. That's the only way to really learn. Kids today don't want to pay their dues, but we all have to. I started out in my profession at the very lowest position and have worked my way to the highest. It was worth it.

25% of grads already having a job lined up doesn’t sound that terrible to me. I would expect some months to a year to find a good career job in this economy. My stepbrother is an electrical engineer and it took him 8 months to find something. He’s got a great career now. Expecting the red carpet to be rolled out for you right of the gate was never realistic.

It ABSOLUTELY depends on the field you chose and where you live! Don’t get a degree in finance, business management, or marketing if you don’t live in a relatively large urban area. Engineering and medical fields are always hiring but it depends heavily upon your willingness to travel or accept an entry level position. Hospitals are always hiring nurses but you may have to start on 3rd/2nd shift and many aren’t willing to do that

I believe it

Not only do you have to contend with the competition but if you don’t check the right boxes for diversity you’re fricked too

Here's a thought.

Generally speaking, if you go up to an 18 year old and you're talking about college, the question asked is, "what do you want to major in".

Might I suggest that the better question is, "based on your natural talents, what do you think THE WORLD would want you to major in"?

This applies to non-college choices also.

Get out of your own heads young people. No one gives a frick what YOU want to do for a living. They give a frick if what you do is something THEY want and need.

My company is hiring a lineman. I think the starting hourly rate is around mid 20’s topping out around mid 50’s. Great benefits as well.

AI is not innovative. By virtue, it is impossible for AI to innovate. It just indexes the internet, which is filled with flawed information.

The energy demands of AI are also enormous.
