This is somewhat different. What they did decades ago was find Y chromosome markers from the living male Jefferson descendants in a known descendent of Sally Hemmings (concluding that he had father descending from the Jefferson line). That didn't really differentiate particular Jefferson men, though, hence the Randolph vs. Thomas controversy that this is trying to sort out. Here they're claiming to have Thomas's hair with his nuclear DNA. That lets them compare DNA across both male & female descendant lines (old study couldn't do that). They also apparently included descendants of Randolph's line and modeled Thomas vs. Randolph and Randolph's sons.
The interesting questions now are whether the hair is securely TJ's & whether the methods really can distinguish those closely related possibilities as strongly as they're claiming. The paper is apparently still in peer review, so I'd like to see the actual methods behind the "1 in 1000" figure.

None of this is particularly important. Jefferson was one of the smartest and best educated of the Founders. His concept of a democratic republic was inspired. He’s heroic in my opinion…
