My mother, whom is 78 years old with respiratory issues, is scared to death right now. I call her daily to comfort her but i'm glad she stays home during this. Poor thing won't even go outside shes so scared. Makes me sad for her and I hope she can find some comfort soon to start living again.

There are a lot of folks who are that scared. Someone put up a survey on NextDoor for our neighborhood and surrounding area. It asked if we should stay locked down until there is a vaccine. At least 45% said yes, even knowing that a vaccine would not be here until next year.

My parents take it seriously because they a pushing 70 and my mom takes care of her mom. Other than that my bro-in-law died 2 weeks ago at 43 not from corona. Side note, his doctor was sent to help with corona patients and he got a doctor who just got out of med school and had no bed side manner.

Got a couple of liberal friends scared of the virus but have one ultra conservative friend thats terrified. She has a running daily FB update that's crazy.

Albuquerque is a big part of her (OP's SIL) problem. They are the capitol of NM and NM is the main state interested in the Navajo nation. (It's in four states, but the others have a lot more going on).
The Corona rate in Navajo country is very high. High enough to be newsworthy back east, so you can imagin the hyperactive reporting out there when nothing much else is happening. The population density isn't great on the reservations, so the spread there scares people. Not that most non-reservation types have any idea of how crowded some homes are, how they chose to socialize, etc.
The federal presence is strong in New Mexico and she probably realizes that anyone with a shred of self respect in their profession has long ago moved away to better places. It's just her and a passel of bureaucrats.
