Mine graduates from OU on this coming Saturday. Was your event the commencement or the graduation from the college (Business, Engineering, etc.)? We have both, one Friday evening and one Saturday afternoon.
I hope to hear something similar.
Congrats, Dad. Well done.

Was at a college graduation tonight as well and the speech was utterly pointless.
Speaker is introduced and lauded for her accomplishments as the first X, Y and Z to hold the position which she then later reiterated. Identity politics at its finest.
The speaker later continued with Crap over and over again, repeating “Hope is Action”. I wanted to tear my ears off listening to this stupidity. Hope is not action. Hope is useless without action.
Best part of the night was watching her finish her speech and no one immediately jumping out of their chairs for a standing ovation. Two of three on the stage starting to and it obviously pressured everyone else to, but it was hilarious to see the delay.
It’s nice to hear good speeches like this one focusing on how you actually make yourself stable, successful and happy. Too many miserable and lonely people out there focused on nothing but success for the wrong reasons.

Oddly I met a guy today that had a daughter at GT. He was beaming about GT even among a group of drunk LSU and Auburn graduates.
I wonder if he heard this speech.

Are we really slurping the wisdom of a kicker?
We have a sitting Supreme Court Justice incapable of defining what a woman is. Common sense is in short supply these days, so it’s worth lauding when present regardless of the speaker’s credentials.

My daughter graduated from GT last May with a Chemical Engineering degree after 5 years. She is very conservative and never felt as if she was outnumbered by left wingers. Her mom and I were impressed with the strict focus the University placed on academics and not on politics.

Awesome. My dad taught and worked in/with their materials science department and had zero work issues (he’s at least as conservative as I am these days).

Are you trying to answer this question for you or all the rest of us? Worry about yourself.

But in general, nobody is going to be turning down a Harvard grad in tech in favor of a GT tech grad. They might interview both but nobody is turning down Ivy League graduates for 'entitlement'
That’s wrong! I’ve hired hundreds of engineers, and I’ve passed on a lot of ivies in favor of state colleges, because the latter were more likely roll up their sleeves and get after it.
Now, when I’ve come across a candidate, from a top tier university, who also has a background of something like farming or construction, I’ll take him in a minute.

Literally heard Victor Davis Hansen say today that Silicon Valley is now more prone to pass up an ivy league applicant for a Georgia Tech applicant because they know they're just as capable and don't come with the entitlement/woke baggage.
This is good to hear.
Props to the commencement speaker.
Hopefully the faculty is not into leftist indoctrination and maintains balance and neutrality.
There was also the GT admins ties to russia gate, just for a promised position in DC.

Congrats to your daughter. Hell of a school.
Seconded.
Also, Interesting time right now... what was old, is new again. Yet, we seem to go backward... even basic values have to celebrated which is a regression.

Unfortunately GT isn’t completely immune; I just saw some alumni letter talking about some BS diversity position within the administration. As a school it’s well behind (or ahead) the average college when it comes to the silly stuff, probably because engineering doesn’t care about feelings. Things work or they don’t, and good intentions, effort, sincerity, etc etc aren’t part of the equation.

That’s awesome! My son graduated from a local state college on Thursday with an AA (he doesn’t graduate from high school for another two weeks) and his commencement speaker was CMoH winner David Bellavia. He was outstanding. Extremely military friendly school- Indian River State College.

Since this is an SEC forum I’ll tell you a school that surprised me: Vandy. Yes, they have liberals but they don’t shout down opposing views. They have (or had, this was several years ago) a female faculty member who’s very well known for being critical of Islam, and there was never any question that her job was in danger when she was in the news.
Unless you get a scholarship (that’s how we did it) or are rolling in money (that’s not how we did it) I’m not sure it’s a good value, but overall it was an extremely positive experience, and my daughter went in and came out a conservative.

Butker’s family and ours attend the same church in Atlanta, and they’re solid people.

The grad program I was in there was liberal, but was pretty good on debating all sides of the spectrum.
