Hell I joined the coast guard and on my dream sheet I put “any cutter any where”. Never spent 1 day in a cutter.

Dream sheets in the Navy never really meant anything. Graduating A-School, we picked our next duty station from the list of open billets provided to us. Top of the class picked first and on down the line. If you wanted a specific duty station/job and it wasn't on the list, oh well, pick something else. If your classmate picked the billet you wanted, oh well, pick something else. Once you're in the fleet and it's time for new orders, call the detailer, negotiate for your next set of orders. But needs of the Navy always came first. If the detailer told you "I have this, this, and this, pick one," guess what, you're going to one of those spots. Sometimes you weren't given a choice, that's why they're called orders. Welcome to Guam, bitch.

I hate to say it. But maybe they need to restrict certain communications and cut back on social media while people are deployed. This is pathetic.

Full disclosure: one of my step-sons serves on a guided missile destroyer that has participated in some interdictions in the Indian Ocean. He was expecting to be in Japan right now, but he knows what he signed up for and is not complaining. He relishes it.

Was in the Navy from 2007-2010. Can honestly say it did not occur to me how much we would be out to sea even when not deployed. It makes sense but it was kinda funny when I first got to my ship and I had that aha moment. Never woulda thought to complain about it though. I was on an independent steamer (not attached to a larger group for deployments) and both my deployments got extended from 7 months to just over 8 and twice we went over 90 days without a port visit. Ships are meant to be at sea it's the way it is.

I strongly suspect the guy was an a-hole that did a lot of shady things, but he won a war for us and that counts for a lot.
If we examine every hero throughout history, we are sure to be disappointed at some point. I'm not making apologies for his character. In fact, I do not doubt it. I'm just saying, I'm sure he ran a tight ship and demanded a level of discipline from his men that we don't expect today.
