Would love for my grandfather to be alive to see this, WW2 Pacific 5 battle stars, was on one of the most deadly sea duties in history on a destroyer as a radar picket off Okinawa at the height of Kamikaze attacks. Thousands of U.S. sailors killed in those 3 months off Okinawa.
130F in the engine room, steam leaks that could cut a man in half like a laser, beans for every meal.

In fairness my son joined the Air Force and they made him fly planes. He totally wasn't expecting that. They need to be more transparent about job duties.

See the world. Join the Navy. Isn’t that still the motto? Sailors sail. On a ship. On an ocean. And no, deployments aren’t all scheduled accurately at all because war has its own playbook. Maybe your daughter should have paid attention.

My grandfather worked the gun turret on DD-649.
Almost sank and had to be towed after the brave MEN in the navy from all over this land beat the snot out of the Japs for good after the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Those brave MEN ended any further large scale Japanese naval operations for the balance of WWII in part by sinking four more Jap aircraft carriers.
Thank you to the brave men of the Navy’s 3rd and 7th fleet for their sacrifice and bravery.

The US Navy has some real soul searching to do and take a hard look at how they select, train and discipline its people. Having to turn a ship around in the middle of a war because some of the sailors got homesick is absolutely disgraceful.

The military's job is to kill the enemy. All these notions of doing a "job" are secondary to the mission of engaging with and destroying any that would threaten the USA.

Had a conversation with a Vietnam vet the other day. He was drafted out of college (Ivy League). He made a good point - we’re no longer getting the the quality of soldiers we used to get. While we do get good people, too many are signing up for the wrong reasons. He suggested bringing back the draft (or requiring 2 years of government service). He had a point, it would probably improve a lot of things.
