Mitch McConnell warns GOPers Bernie may be a bigger threat than they think

"When a reporter asked McConnell on Tuesday if he believed, as several other Republicans do, that the democratic socialist’s victory in the primary would help maintain a GOP majority in the Senate, the Republican leader cautioned against underestimating Sanders.
“I’m reminded of when the Democrats back in 1980 were all pulling for Ronald Reagan to be the nominee because they thought he’d be the easiest to beat,” McConnell said. “I think Republicans speculating about which Democratic candidate for president would be the easiest to beat may be a bit foolish.”
“I think it’s going to be a contested general election with a lot of energy on both sides,” he continued. “And for myself I’ll leave it up to the Democrats to pick who they’d like to be their candidate.”
The GOP leader added that the Democratic candidates were all the same to him anyway, calling them “very, very far to the left.”
“It looks like moderate Democrats are an endangered species or may have disappeared already,” he said.

I think Trump beats him but I'd rather him not be the nominee. There's a lot of people that will vote for him because they think they are going to get a bunch of freebies.

Certainly. That's exactly how Trump got elected. No one took him all that seriously until the returns started coming in.

If Bernie beats Trump then the GOP will absolutely also lose Senate and the House will become even more leftist than it is today because it means that the Democrats will have turned out in record numbers in critical swing states where the Senate seats are at play.

I think trump crushes him, but he is sort of like trump’s 2016 run in that everybody thinks he is a fringe joke candidate that has zero chance to win.

I don’t want him to be the nominee because non of the candidates are moderate but he’s the only one will get the turnout Bernie could bring.
If he’s not the nominee, the DNC has no momentum at all

But Dems will steal the nom from BS. It's very likely he won't quite reach a majority of delegates. I don't think they'll give him one more delegate than they have to. It will be someone not named Bernie.

Truth
Can’t underestimate Bernie or voters buying into “free”, and believes Bernie math.

Bingo. Capitalism will be on trial here in 2020. I don’t think the takers outnumber the givers, yet. But, it will be as polarizing an election since prob 1980.

It all comes down to turnout and there are far more democrats in this country than there are Republicans. If Bernie can get record turnout he could win. I don't see it happening but all of the I cant wait for Bernie talk is a bit foolish.

Correct.
Bernie is running with the same populist energy that Trump ran on in 2016, gets big crowds and the Bernie Bros are just as ravenous as the MAGA crowd is.
Bernie is not someone to be taken lightly. We're going to have to fight for it as hard as we can.

Also, voter fraud. Don’t forget voter fraud by the libs. You can count on it.

I think this will probably galvanize a lot of people on the right who are still not sold on Trump, but there will be a lot of people on the left that will hold their nose and vote for Bernie

Correct. But middle class Dems, Dems who own businesses and have money, and Dems who still want to work for a living will never vote sanders. Plus, Dems in unions and Dems who work in PA oil will never vote Sanders (health care/fracking).
Sanders has never been scrutinized in an election, and Trump will eat him apart.
I say all this as someone who didn’t vote Trump in 2016, and prob won’t in 2020.

Like Trump, Bernie isn't the establishment pick. However, he is the ONLY candidate for the Dems to have what appears to be a very loyal group of supporters with some excitement for his candidacy. In no way, shape or form should a guy like Donald Trump have been able to excite conservative old men/women from somewhere like Alabama. But he did because he seemed to be the only guy standing up to the political elite AND the Democrats. Bernie's supporters feel the same way.
However, the comparison to Reagan is a bit misplaced. Sure, he may have been looked at as a fringe candidate (which is kind of dumb considering he waged a pretty good campaign in 1976 vs. Ford). But the incumbent at the time (Carter) wasn't particularly popular with ANYBODY, including many in his own party. Plus, and most importantly, the economy under Carter was complete dogshit and getting worse going into the 1980 election.
Trump on the other hand has had a tremendous economy. Then you contrast that with the fact that Bernie admittedly wants to crush the economy and capitalism, and the comparison to 1980 isn't apt.
Bernie is going to have his ardent group of misfits and losers zealously backing him. He's going to get a significant amount of people who are just so infected with TDS that they will vote against their economic interest. The question is just how many and is the hate for Donald Trump so great that voters will purposely implode the economy just to get Trump out? That seems to go against all precedent. When Clinton and Obama has their "surprise" victories the economy at the time was struggling.

Bernie is their Goldwater
Problem is that means socialism is coming 16 years later like what happened in 1964. Which it probably is.

Anybody but Bernie. My fear is that after Tuesday he maybe too far ahead in the Delegate count. Discord at the Democrat Convention is the best that Republicans can hope for.
